THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

PORGY AND BESS

MILES DAVIS: “IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO”

This is from Miles’ 1958 Gershwin disk, and it’s a keeper. Miles does a jazz take that’s quite different from Jascha’s classical idea.

Whoa, you may be moving to a new job in a new state?

Could you expound on that if it's not too personal? Or PM.

OSCAR PETERSON: “IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO”

This is a rare video from the early Sixties from one of the great jazz pianists of his era.

Maybe you’re right. The record I had when I was younger and singing that was Elvis.

ARETHA FRANKLIN: “IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO”

This is from the First Lady of Soul’s early work with Columbia in the Sixties before she joined Ahmet Ertegun’s Atlantic Records in 1967 to work with producer Jerry Wexler. Mitch Miller never quite figured out what to do with her and saw her primarily as a jazz singer. She was acceptable in that area, but it was Wexler who understood her strengths and let her work her magic.

I rather enjoyed the line, "But no girl will give in to no man with 900 years." The Ebonic verb "to give in" of that era has been replaced with the High Ebonic verb, "to bone."

Times have changed.
