Texas to California on travel ban: Get a life
Houston Chronicle ^ | June 23, 2017 | Mike Ward

AUSTIN -- A day after California banned state-funded travel to Texas, citing a new Lone Star adoption law they say is discriminatory, Texas officials on Friday mocked the decision as a cheap political stunt.

There were suggestions that Texas lawmakers might retaliate when they come into a special session starting July 18.

"California might be able to stop their state employees, but they can't stop all the businesses that are fleeing over taxation and regulation, and relocating to Texas," said Gov. Greg Abbott's press secretary. John Wittman.

Privately, Abbott aides and legislative leaders dissed the California move as hollow. noting that if the Golden State is so concerned about discrimination and human rights outside its borders, then why did their Gov. Jerry Brown recently visit China.

Several said California's move appears hypocritical. In China, gay marriage is illegal, workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is common, same-sex rape is not against the law, and the civil rights of LGBTQ people are not protected.

"It's funny how the very state that is so adamantly against keeping terrorists out of our country -- they oppose the President's travel ban -- now wants to keep Californians out of Texas," said Marc Rylander, communications director for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. "I guess that's California logic."

Because California's travel ban covers universities, several noted that San Jose State University might be unable to play the University of Texas Longhorns in Austin in a scheduled game Sept. 9.

UT plays the University of Southern California Trojans the following week in California.

I so despise the govt. vermin that runs this state.

I’m 56y/o right now. My retirement cannot come fast enough to get the hell out of this state.

This is what happens when Democrats control a State, it drives it into lunacy.

They'll bend their own rules (to make exceptions for themselves) and say their doing it "for the children".

I made the retirement move from the once-golden-state to a "red" state a couple of years ago.

I haven't regretted the move for a nanosecond.

BTW, I do wish that Cali would reverse it's anti-business, pro-illegal immigration and pro-crime (think early release here) laws and become a livable state again. It gives me no pleasure to see it become America's Venezuela.

Taxes should offer a tax special to California businesses relocating to Texas.

This is just the beginning of the backlash, some real, some done mockingly. Other state officials can be just as arrogant, just as prideful as in California.
Just think of sports rivalries.

Heads up. Cali has a history of seeking income tax revenue from people who leave.

Be sure you own nothing there after you go. No storage bins. No real estate for sure. When you leave, do not retain any of the tiniest indication of still being a resident OR planning to return some day.

If you do, they will tax you.

It gives me no pleasure to see it become America's Venezuela.

Looks like Illinois will beat them to it. But Illinois may jump directly to Zimbabwe.

This act was pointless because California has banned out of state travel for their state employees since 2011.

I think I finally figured out the ideological riff between the parties.

Republicans have something to reference against. China, Venezuela, Soviet Union, South Africa, pick a Moslem country. We look at the US and see it as a proud country.

Democrats have nothing to compare America to so it is easier for them to vilify the country and their ideological opposites. So they see all the bad things and that’s what they hitch their wagon to.

Speaking of such the California D.M.V. demanded we pay registration fees due for our vehicles after we had moved from the state. The correspondence was mailed to our new out-of-state address! Drawn on the bill in large black permanent Sharpie was a circle around the new address accompanied by the words “Get a clue!” and returned. Never heard from them again. I have no doubt in my military mind some administrative penalty still lurks in the Golden State awaiting my return.

Fat chance of that happening!
