AUSTIN -- A day after California banned state-funded travel to Texas, citing a new Lone Star adoption law they say is discriminatory, Texas officials on Friday mocked the decision as a cheap political stunt.
There were suggestions that Texas lawmakers might retaliate when they come into a special session starting July 18.
"California might be able to stop their state employees, but they can't stop all the businesses that are fleeing over taxation and regulation, and relocating to Texas," said Gov. Greg Abbott's press secretary. John Wittman.
Privately, Abbott aides and legislative leaders dissed the California move as hollow. noting that if the Golden State is so concerned about discrimination and human rights outside its borders, then why did their Gov. Jerry Brown recently visit China.
Several said California's move appears hypocritical. In China, gay marriage is illegal, workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is common, same-sex rape is not against the law, and the civil rights of LGBTQ people are not protected.
"It's funny how the very state that is so adamantly against keeping terrorists out of our country -- they oppose the President's travel ban -- now wants to keep Californians out of Texas," said Marc Rylander, communications director for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. "I guess that's California logic."
Because California's travel ban covers universities, several noted that San Jose State University might be unable to play the University of Texas Longhorns in Austin in a scheduled game Sept. 9.
UT plays the University of Southern California Trojans the following week in California.

To make it easy, go buy a false id from an illegal alien hanging out down from the bus station, try to get another storage locker near the current one, pay cash in advance, and move all dead bodies to the new one, and shut down the one in your name, and move...
“When you leave, do not retain any of the tiniest indication of still being a resident OR planning to return some day.”
Corzine did that to me when I left Jersey for Texas.
Commerce clause violation!!
I'm sure if Kali could get an extra dime from that way, they probably have the law/regulation on it.
Now if only we can figure out how to keep the fleeing kalifornicators from infesting neighboring states.
Same here. Californication can kiss off when I take my assets to a more welcoming state. My plan is to do it after the current real estate bubble inflates enough for me to cash out and hit the road.
Absolutely.
Establishing residency in a new **low income tax state** is a process. You must have an address, and a current utility bill sent to you at that address is very powerful. So is a resident’s fishing or hunting license, because those indicate that a state agency declared you a resident.
But the criteria is “have terminated residency and have no intention to return there to live”. If you retain a storage bin. If you own rental property. If you didn’t cancel utilities (maybe paying for a elderly parent). ANYTHING THAT SUGGESTS YOU WILL RETURN will provide Cali (or NY or IL or NJ or anywhere with big taxes) justification to look for a chunk of your income.
This is a big deal for expats who move to Mexico or Philippines or wherever. They must go to a low income tax state first, get a drivers license, get an apartment and some utility bills saved . . . all that sort of thing and THEN leave for overseas. Otherwise California will look for a chunk of their income and they have been known to track down mutual funds you may have and take it from them.
I was just thinking of the conniption fits Brown threw in the 1970s over other ag states trying to ban Medfly-tainted Kali produce.
And make sure you answer their letters claiming you owe taxes to assure them you are not libel to pay CA taxes even though you have moved out.
CA has been known to put liens on people’s out of state property just to mess with them.
Taxpayers are leaving California in the tens of thousands and many are heading to Texas. California had better reevaluate their priorities or they will have more on welfare than does Illinois.
Funny how the California Board of Equalization still has an office in Houston.
“No Californians in Kentucky!!”
Really?
Maybe you should rethink your association with Fresno based
Free Republic OR maybe you could make an exception for
California FReepers and other California conservatives....
(note: This post was conceived in the same spirit as the post
it is responding to.)
OK...but you gotta bring your own stills.
Oh yeah, California has a travel ban to Kentucky too.
... junkets, friend. Every employee loves an all expenses paid “vacation”.
I think they know what their priorities are, and that outcome aligns with them very well. All those welfare clients are reliable D voters, doncha know.
I worked briefly for a company that is based in California, but never set foot in or worked there. California came after me in my home state demanding that I pay income tax. It was the more than a bit of a wake up to be sure.
They seem to forget what muzzies do to homosexuals, and they want them imported by the millions. Anyone in their right mind would call out the democrats on this often.
