The Real Lesson of Ossoff's Defeat is the Bay Area Can't Buy an Election
Front Page ^ | June 21, 2017 | Daniel Greenfield

The left is having a sad day after losing in Georgia despite the $23 million that was squandered to buy an election for a lefty rich kid from outside a Republican district.

At the Washington Post, where democracy drowns in its own hateful saliva, the lesson is that Ossoff was just too "civil".   How do you get more civil than "Make Trump Furious"? And what better template is there for winning, what was supposed to be a stealth election in a basically Republican district than a lack of civility.

Here's the actual lesson. The Bay Area poured a fortune into a special election in another state without having a clue about the district. Its bright boys and girls poured their anger into organizing. And it backfired.

Great article about how Democrat star candidate Ossoff was able to lose to an unknown woman despite an enormous advantage in funding, media support, celebrity support and support from national politicians.

All Handel had was almost no funding and the support of Donald Trump.

The polls and media pundits said Ossoff was far ahead and a sure winner. Just like they said about Hillary Clinton.

So we don't really need to "get the money out of politics" after all.

Everybody in GA knows Karen Handel. She was previously Secretary of State. She also ran for Purdue’s Senate seat.

She is a terrible campaigner though.

Karen Handel is quite well known in Georgia. She was a very good Secretary of State, did a lot of work to make elections safer from vote fraud. She’s had several unsuccessful runs for public office since then - she is not particularly photogenic or well-spoken. But she’s not a bad candidate. She’ll do O.K.

"I have received non-stop calls, texts emails for two months solid. It's harassment honestly," local artist Sydney Daniel told Business Insider. "I liked Ossoff before but now I don't want to vote at all because of how obnoxious and ruthless they have been."

"Phone Calls, junk mail, emails, and guys coming up to my door banging for a vote," Rebecca Honness, a lifelong resident of the district, said as she described the aggressive campaigning. "That was truly scary... having someone knock on my door about an election. ... I've never had that happen before."

That's what happens when you throw too much money and resources...

The major media have totally poisoned the well on any political discourse.

After months of non stop media Trump bashing, the average citizen does not want to talk politics with strangers under any circumstances.

Therefore a door knocker for a campaign delivers the meta-message that the candidate is an idiot.

If the message is anti-Trump the meta-message is “I am here to harass you.”

She received almost no coverage in the media whatsoever.

Ossoff was praised almost nonstop by nearly everyone in the media.dse

So is this a new record?

I've heard it said that the Democrats spent $176 per vote in this special election. Does anyone know of a more expensive campaign?

Ossoff should move to California and challenge Pelosi.

If you told Bay Area nose pickers that Ossoff was a “carpetbagger” they’d think it was a compliment.

They have no idea what that means to people in the South.

At least the Americans that are left there.

For only One Million, I would have driven to GA, got the right address, and voted for PJ boy.

I am so willing to help.

Only “right wing” money. /s

Plus they get unlimited airtime from the media.

It’s amazing that our side ever wins an election.

The only things we have going for us is reality and experience.

It's worse than that.

Awhile back, a complete unknown named Robert Stooksbury ran as a Dem against the longtime incumbent, Tom Price. He didn't spend a dime except the filing fee (and for all I know he may have filed a poverty affidavit) and had NO advertising at all. He got 119,536 votes doing absolutely nothing.

So Ossoff spent $22M to get 4,357 votes. By my calculations, that's $5,049.35 per vote (if you round up.)

Correction: his name was Rodney Stooksbury. Supposed to be a retired aeronautics engineer, but apparently reporters went to his house, couldn’t ever get in touch with him. A real stealth candidate. . .
