Full Title..........................Coroner grants request from Otto Warmbier's family NOT to perform autopsy on the student who died after being held captive in North Korea for 17 month - as US government calls for three more Americans to be freed.........................An autopsy will not be performed on Otto Warmbier's body, after a coroner granted his family's request not to do so.
The Hamilton County Coroner's Office released a statement Tuesday after conferring with doctors at the Cincinnati hospital where the 22-year-old student died just days after he was returned from North Korea.
Warmbier had been held captive in the country for 17 months.
Coroner Dr Lakshmi Sammarco said in the statement the student's family stated it did not want an autopsy to be completed after an external examination.

Maybe Nork agents showed them pictures of their house, and family members.
This is a mistake. No autopsy on Scalia? Also a mistake.
What would show up on an autopsy that wouldn’t show up on an MRI or a cat scan?
Lots of things a family might not want shared with the public.
Same here. They probably just want don’t want to officially know the horrors their son went thru. Everyone knows the North Korean scum killed him.
This would suggest that the parents may be concerned that an autopsy would show the death was the result of a suicide.
I think it is imperative that a cause of death be determined. Without it the US has no basis for retaliation.
If claim of murder, maybe political, how can one not be performed? Otto did not die of natural causes. The feds should step in, else we ignore his death and move on.
It’s a stupid decision. The young man was stupid enough to go to NK and was stupid enough to steal a poster. Now the family won’t allow the gathering of evidence necessary for taking action against NK. The US should just forget the whole incident, we owe the family nothing.
Tay-Sachs???
One might recall that Mary Jo Kopechne's parents refused to allow an aotopsy. Had one been performed, the history of the subsequent four decades might have been significantly altered.
>> If hes Jewish I understand. If not, I dont. <<
When her husband passed away in an “unattended” death, a good (Christian) friend who is an MD would not approve an autopsy. She said that as a professional, she knew all too well how the remains were sometimes treated, and she simply couldn’t bear the thought of what might happened with her loved one.
>> The young man was stupid enough to go to NK <<
Agreed.
>> and was stupid enough to steal a poster <<
Never proven. His “confession” was obviously under duress.
For all we know, moreover, he may never even have touched a poster, but rather was simply grabbed by the NORK’s to be used later as some kind of bargaining chip — or for some kind of propaganda stunt.
“The publics curiosity does not outweigh the murder victims right to privacy.”
In this case, it’s not just “the public’s curiosity”. If the administration is contemplating an action in response to his death, Trump needs to confirm what they’re dealing with so he’s not going in blindly. Proportionality is important when world events are involved.
I understand that the basic issue is that the kid was apprehended there for a ridiculous reason, the punishment didn’t fit the crime, the dictator is a monster, Otto is gone, etc. There was some talk that perhaps he hanged himself and lost brain function as a result. If true, he could’ve chosen to live and now would be home with the family thanks to the efforts of Trump and Tillerson.
It’s important for the administration to know as much as possible about what they’re dealing with.
If an autopsy isn’t done, it’s because the admin is ok with that. If the admin wanted an autopsy, they could use local, state and/or federal law to ensure one was done.
Doesn’t that kill in early childhood? Maybe he did have something and they want it covered up? Could help explain the idiocy of him going to North Korea in the first place.
sometimes the needs of your country come first. The child is dead
Two points. He is not a child and there are no over riding needs of the Country. EVERYONE knows that he was tortured and killed by the NK’s Having an autopsy will make no difference in that conclusion. Nothing is going to be done about it one way or the other!
You’re probably right; expect those conversations took place even before he died.
The whole situation is such a tragedy; I can’t even imagine the horror of all involved.
Trump knows exactly what they’re dealing with. It was torture and murder.
If the President wanted more, he would have asked for it. I believe the President is respecting the parents wishes.
Yes; you’re right.
Unless you have lost a child, you just don’t understand. My daughter and only child died in her sleep, so they had to do an autopsy to determine cause of death. She was a healthy 29 year old who had a baby 18 months before with no complications. It took them six months to finally come to the conclusion that she died of cardiac arrhythmia. In my mind, I know it was necessary, but I still have nightmares knowing they dissected my daughter’s body. Grief killed my husband. My grief will last until I die.
