Gov. Jerry Brown and state politicians will receive a 3 percent pay hike starting in December, their fifth raise in as many years as Californias budget picture continues to improve.
The raises, approved Monday by the California Citizens Compensation Commission, come on top the 4 percent salary increases that kicked in late last year. Browns pay will climb from $190,102 to $195,805, while rank-and-file lawmakers will go from $104,117 to $107,240.
Salaries for other statewide politicians like Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Treasurer John Chiang also will rise.
The raises, which came amid five years of economic and budget recovery, represent another incremental increase after the appointed commission, beginning in 2009, moved to significantly slash lawmakers pay down from $116,208 to $95,291, a nearly 20 percent cut. In 2009, California voters approved a measure, Proposition 1F, that banned raises during years of state budget deficits.
Before last years 4 percent raise, pay increased by 3 percent in 2015, 2 percent in 2014, and 5 percent in 2013. On Monday, commissioners said it was only fair politicians continued to be made whole following the reductions.
But commissioners again held off on more dramatically boosting the salaries of Brown and Becerra, even though the governor and attorney general positions pay significantly less than what many local government officials earn, according to studies produced by the commission.
There has been broad agreement in past years, including among taxpayer advocate groups, that the governors salary is too low given the size of the state and the responsibilities of the post.
In addition to the salaries, California lawmakers also receive tax-free per diem payments for every day the Legislature is in session, compensation that during the 2015 legislative year averaged about $34,000 per legislator.

Democrats: always stealing from the taxpayers and wasting money. It is what they do.
A real bang-up job, indeed. They should all take long vacations too.. maybe come back for a month every other year or so.. so they can take long junkets with rich donors.. oh wait.. junkets happen.
BS!
This is their dream for America, change the demographics with illegals and rule like the one party pigs they are.
“as Californias budget picture continues to improve.”
Calif’s unfunded pension liabilities alone are several hundred billion dollars.
Oh he deserves it since the finances of Ca. are in such good shape now. industrial strength/sarc.
California’s budget picture is NOT good. They have been using smoke ad mirrors.
It has unfunded liabilities exceeding 1 TRILLION dollars. Just as here in Dallas they kicked the can down the road for years and now it has exploded in their faces, so too shall that bomb explode in California’s face.
They are already taxed more than almost every state in the nation, it is about to get worse and there WILL be a mass exodus — not the onesies/twosies they are seeing now.
Talk about Chutzpah! The arrogant as***e has big 'uns, in addition to clueless ignorance.
I don't have time to list the numerous ways he and the legislature have shafted the working California taxpayers, but it is both amazingly long term and extremely cost ignorant.
To be expanded on when I have more time.
Those elected criminals are stupidly lacking in the sensing of voter anger and frustration.
Over in Chicagoland, Liz points out that Valerie al-Jarrett Binks worked part-time for eight years at a some public trough and left with a 35K pension.
Nice work if you can get it.
BTW, President Trump is waiving his salary
and his gorgeous wife isn’t pillaging the Treasury by payrolling groupies/cronies, constant vacays and hugely unpopular pet causes while bitching about the job of FLOTUS the whole time.
I guess all this will just speed up the day when the entire state is completely bankrupt. Could be targets on some politician’s backs by then...if there isn’t already.
Free car and healthcare and an extra $34,000 for showing up.
What expenses do they have?
Last month Gov Brown pushed a state bill that would cost $400 billion dollars, free health care for everyone in California. He did so with no plans as to how it will be paid for, and at a time when companies are fleeing the state.
Yes, Cat, and I think I may have finally convinced my wife to leave the once-Golden, and my native, State.
I’ve long wanted to leave California, but for the sake of my wife’s family ties here. We were born and raised in San Francisco, at a time when it was a Republican city. I’m buying some property in Iowa, and we can travel back and forth until ready to cut the leash in California. My daughter and her family are in Iowa. Wife’s mom is 92, we take care of her and her affairs and the siblings would resist moving her out of state. Someday the time will come for us to move. Yep, get out while you can.

Yep and the $15 min. wage and Socialized Medicine scheme will be the last straws. Doctor’s and the Producers will be gone, vacuum filled by deadbeat gemmedats coming in from everywhere.
Former Mayor Joe Alioto looks pretty sane compared to what SF is today.
“California, once the most envied state for its glamour, sparkle and prosperity, clearly needs help now in spending money it no longer has. California officials concede that the state faces a wall of debt of $26 billion, and when unfunded state and municipal liabilities (pensions, bonds, interfund borrowing, and so forth) are included, the debt surpasses $400 billion.”
