The bodies of some of the seven US sailors missing after a pre-dawn collision off the coast of Japan on Saturday have been found, the Navy said early Sunday.
They were found in compartments below the waterline that flooded when the collision tore holes in their destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald. They died either from the impact or drowned when seawater flooded the compartments.
Most of the approximately 300 sailors on the ship were asleep at the time.

A cargo vessel almost 20 times as large as this maneuverable military ship can sneak up on it..???
how could we expect such a ship or 30 others like it to detect missiles fired at it by a determined belligerent, using the sharpest stealth possible..??
this will be one of the precious few cases in which I hear about Navy careers destroyed and I feel absolutely no sympathy.
It sounds like the US Navy is too worried about accommodating diversity training, trannies and soon-to-be pregnant ladies while the really important, basic stuff falls to the Wayside.

If most of the crew were sleeping , this ship was unaware of a potential collision and was not engaging in maneuvers to get out of the way
The fact that the USG is silent is good
Suggests fact finding is underway and its more than just a simple “ right of way” collision
Not much is coming out of anywhere about the cargo ship and its erratic course and who was in charge

Just arrived Japan today...news accounts here are more precise and indicate the merchant was overtaking and therefore the give way vessel... doesn’t absolve the co or get back our men, but helps to explain some things.
If it got t-boned by a 200 ton cargo ship it would have been cut in half, crushed and sunk

Thanks for this- the damage did seem to suggest cargo ship approached on parallel course gradually converging from astern , not broadside
Now - was Fitzgerald underway or “ hove to” in anchorage area off sealanes?
If you look at the hull of container ships there’s a below the waterline bulbous protrusion. The major damage to the Fitzgerald was below the waterline where it can’t be seen in the photos. The damage was due to simple physics.
