Restaurant die-off is first course of California’s $15 minimum wage
The Fresno Bee ^ | June 13, 2017 | Jeremy Bagott

In a pair of affluent coastal California counties, the canary in the mineshaft has gotten splayed, spatchcocked and plated over a bed of unintended consequences, garnished with sprigs of locally sourced economic distortion and non-GMO, “What the heck were they thinking?”

The result of one early experiment in a citywide $15 minimum wage is an ominous sign for the state’s poorer inland counties as the statewide wage floor creeps toward the mark.

Consider San Francisco, an early adopter of the $15 wage. It’s now experiencing a restaurant die-off, minting jobless hash-slingers, cashiers, busboys, scullery engineers and line cooks as they get pink-slipped in increasing numbers. And the wage there hasn’t yet hit $15.

As the East Bay Times reported in January, at least 60 restaurants around the Bay Area had closed since September alone.

They didn’t need all those eateries anyway. Each city just needs a few government run restaurants with workers making good salaries and full benefits.

It will be better food at a better price.

The Affordable Food Act, coming soon!

“unintended consequences”
Sorry, but they are intended.

The consequences are foreseeable, foreseen, and therefore intended.

I don’t understand why liberals can’t understand that raising the minimum wage requires ALL employees get a similar increase. Can’t start a new employee at the same or more than you are currently paying someone who has worked for you for years. So everyone gets more pay and they buy a new car, house, desiger shoes, etc, thus creating a higher demand for these products. Problem is the workers for the makers of those things also had to be paid more to comply with the minimum wage increase, so the cost of those thing will increase as much or more than the increase in pay they got. So the unskilled and unexperienced first time employee finds that they may get the $15 an hour but that soon afterwards they find that the $7 they were getting bought them just as much or more.

I know freepers know this and I know that the liberal politicians behind the move to increase the minimum wage understand it. The problem is those evil politicians use it a a wedge issue to the votes of those unskilled and low educated citizens and they really could care less if they starved to death. They use the same tactic with health care and politicians, inluding some republicans, also could care less if the poor are able to get medical treatment byond the fact that if they die they lose their vote, well at least their legal vote.

“The Affordable Food Act, coming soon!”

Complete with a Supreme Court sanctioned tax/penalty/tax on those who choose NOT eat at state-mandated restaurants.

If the state can force you to buy third-party health insurance, why not cauliflower?

I don’t understand why liberals can’t understand

I see your problem right up front. You actually think they don’t understand, they do, they understand all of it, they thrive on power, they lust for the contrlo over their fellow man, they covet the thought of wielding unspeakable power over the citizenry. They absolutely understand that the more destitute, poor, broke, and helpless they make the average citizen, the more they will be empowered. The newly expanding class of serf’s will continue to vote for the Slave Masters for their daily bread.

in Other words, they are JUST PLAIN EVIL in their hearts and souls, nothing has changed with the average democrat since the 1850’s and the sooner you recognize and come to grips with Pure Evil in it’s most basic form, a Democrat, you willl continue to wonder why for the rest of your life.

The automating could extend to high end food as well—robots prepare it, drones deliver it—no waiters and waitresses needed.

statists believe in central planning. The minimum wage is simply one manifestation of their worship of central planning

It’s a racket.

80% get raises and thank the politicians.

This is the aspect of raising the minimum wage that galls me the most. Thank politicians? What the hell did they do? Did they come up with the money? Do they ever have to make a payroll? No. And yet they will turn themselves into pretzels patting themselves on the back and expecting adulation from the voters. And in the process they drive a wedge between the employer and the employee. In effect, what they (the politicians) are saying is "Your boss is screwing you and is up to us to make sure you are adequately compensated". It disgusts me.

Socialism/communism/totalitarianism is on the way for the great state of California.

That's been the plan ever since Brown's first governorship back in the 1970s. California's well on its way to becoming Venezuela North.

“If one’s family runs the place from kitchen to cashier, they need not be paid at all.”

In my area, construction wages are pathetically low due to so many contractors hiring illegals. However, in order to be able to compete with such low bids, some contractors I’ve seen have their young sons working as their laborers. The millions of illegals in our country have created this mess, along with their greedy employers.

From SF to Reno is about 250 miles, the same from LA to Quartzsite, AZ, and from San Diego to Yuma, AZ.

So if you want a nice dinner, hop a plane and fly to Nevada or Arizona. While you’re there, you can buy duty free cigarettes, have goose pate with your dinner, and have your gay kids receive therapy to make them straight again.

1-Day 1-Park: Children $104.00, Adults $110.00

Family of 4, Park Hopper: $646.00 just to walk into the park.

20% of the workers lose their jobs and blame politicians, 80% get raises and thank the politicians.

A 4 to 1 advantage for the politicians... politicians aren’t stupid. As long as the media lies for them they’re gold.

Yeah, but the math doesn’t work quite that way because people have children. Someone might think they are helped by the minimum wage - but their children can’t get jobs. That is one consideration . . .
