From what I understand, if Scalise had not been there, NO protection would have been there. Congressman need to be defending themselves. More bodyguards will insulated from the public and make them even more out of touch.

The solution isn’t more bodyguards.

The VA has to have their own armed police. The natural continuation of that is that the VA employees threaten the Veterans with the VA police.

I had a medical appointment with a VA healthcare provider and the first thing she did when I walked into the exam room was to show me her emergency police call button on her desk.

The threat was clear. Obey me, or I’ll bring in my helper with the gun.

I agree that bodyguards would just make our elected officials more unresponsive to us.
