Green deathtraps: energy-saving renovation blamed for horrific Grenfell Tower fire in London
The American Thinker ^ | 06/16/17 | Thomas Lifson

In the wake of the ghastly conflagration that engulfed a recently-renovated 24 story apartment tower in London, the world is waking up to the dire threat created by energy-saving green zealots. It turns out that nobody much worried about the fire hazard involved when flammable materials were used to add an outer “skin” of cladding to the building, creating heat insulation thanks to the air pocket between the new cladding and the old exterior wall, but also providing an ideal space for fire to race up the building. As happened.

Snip

Did green fever cause the obvious fire hazard to be ignored? We simply do not know. But the zealotry of those who are convinced that CO2 increases are dooming us could well prioritize energy savings above safety. As seems to have been done in London.

How many more green death traps are out there? Tens of thousands in the UK, but how many in the USA?

Next on the Green agenda...how to design these towers so that they emit less CO2 when they burn down.

Was that what happened in that New Year’s Eve fire in Dubai in 2015/2016?

I bought two refrigerators last year that used propane as the refrigerant.

Propane is a perfect drop-in replacement for R-12, the old refrigerator coolant( far as function is concerned).
But obviously propane is flammable, not good in an electrical setting.

I too just bought a small dorm sized refrigerator,. The Refrigerant? R-600, isobutane. Very flammable.

Drug lab is still on my list, too, though lower down. I’ll be amazed if, given the condition of the top floors, they can figure out the ignition source. I’ll be even more amazed if they’re upfront about it.

Also, there really ought to be a tick tock done of the event: when someone in the building first alerted to a problem, when it was called in, what authorities and residents did from turn on. I think that a detailed tick-tock might answer a lot of questions.

I was watching t.v. at the time, and someone mentioned that the fire was jumping from cladding to cladding, which was spreading the fire. Good job, greenies.

WARNING! Those little refrigerators sold for college dorm rooms and office break rooms are fire bombs waiting to explode. Most of those manufactured in recent years are filled with a highly flammable propane-like refrigerant. Someday a dorm will go up in flames and one of these will be fingered as the culprit.

Oh, the Government, or actually the people that work for and make up The Government hold the Citizens in the basest of contempt. The only ones they respect are the rich and the politically powerful. And that is the fawning boot licking fake respect. The ones we elect to political office lie to u causally on a daily basis when the truth, most times, would serve them better. That is one reason that they hate President Trump so viciously and so thoroughly. At the time he is saying it he believes it to be true. There are not enough time from now to eternity to list all the reasons that they hate him. And us.

Ironically most of the people in the building were Muslims.

If anything deserves an internet meme it’s this. A picture of this burning building and some pithy comment about green energy insulation and its consequences.

Honestly, this click bait story is fake news. Maybe green concerns will turn out to be a primary factor, but it's too soon to tell. It appears to be a failure of government on a few dozen different levels.

Like much of the anti-Trump stories, this "green menace" conjecture is a conclusion in search of a story, designed to generate clicks and outrage.

Use your own eyes.

The exterior cladding of that building caught fire and burned quickly, spreading the fire to the entire structure within 15 minutes. So it is obvious that the cladding was flammable. Anybody with eyes can see that.

The cladding was chosen for a number of reasons, but high on this list are aesthetics and energy efficiency.

The same results could have been achieved using fire resistive materials, of course. The decision to go cheap was not driven by "green" considerations alone, but this type of renovation is often driven by a "payback" analysis, where the construction cost must be balanced by energy savings over a set number of years. This leads to great pressure to minimize costs as much as possible.

Nothing you wrote contradicted a single thing I said. The cladding will likely be judged a critical factor, but one of many. And you twice tell me to open my eyes to see that the cladding was flammable, when I never said it wasn't. Obviously it was flammable, who's contesting that? It went up like wrapping paper. They didn't want to pay more for the fire retardant material.

My point, clearly stated, was that the headline ("Green deathtraps: energy-saving renovation blamed for horrific Grenfell Tower fire in London") was click bait, in which an inflammatory headline was designed to assign exclusive blame to a favorite boogieman of a certain sub-group. There has been no investigation let alone conclusions yet, and environmental considerations may turn out to have been a factor, but it doesn't seem likely that those environmental concerns will be "blamed for horrific Grenfell Tower fire in London" - to the exclusion of far more likely culprits like greed, negligence and stupidity.

And true privatization is virtually impossible in the public sector.

Exactly. If the idea of adding insulation to make buildings more energy efficient is now green hysteria, well then I guess we've been a hysterical species for a long time.

As near as I can tell, Reynobond, the cladding referenced upthread, isn't even advertised or promoted as a green product.

From the Sun: Numerous schemes have made use of the cheap insulation to get green energy ticks next to developments. Other stories said the cladding was added to improve the appearance. The cladding played a huge role in the spread of the fire.
