It occurs to me that, as hard as it is to see, we don’t want them to settle down. We want them to get even worse and worse. To the point a rational person would not even consider voting for them.

Are you certain there are rational people existing that don’t already see that? The problem may well be that there aren’t enough rational people left in America. The camps are already well divided with stark differences. There isn’t a lot left to win over. You go to battle with what you have...and it appears that full-on battle is getting closer by the day.
