Its been six months since the citys soda tax (or, more accurately, the sugary beverage tax) was implemented and its off to a rocky start.
The city is currently $20 million short of its projected $46 million goal to close out the 2017 fiscal year, and based on the most available months numbers, it doesnt appear as though they will reach it.
But Im not surprised by any of this. By the time last June when Mayor Kenney pulled a fast one on City Council to strike the deal, I had already warned about the consequences in lower-income communities.

Really? I can buy 12 12oz can for under $4.50 locally, so a 48%+ tax seems pretty stiff to me.
Apparently Seattle wants to flop too.
Common sense says there is a fine balancing act between tolerated taxation and something that inspires black marketing. However, when nanny state “enlightened” politicians get in the act, common sense goes out the window. They must have assumed everyone would happily pay a tax imposed for their health.
“I can buy 12 12oz can for under $4.50 locally,”
We have 3 for $9 here every other week.
Yup and with a even higher tax. Gotta love those clueless micromanaging social(ist) engineers on the city council
2 words: Laffer Curve.
As I just posted on the Terry McAwful thread (93 million Americans killed by guns every day, didn’t you know it??), Libtards are usually ignorant and innumerate.
Taxing the poor is what liberals do—while claiming they want to tax the rich.
Was driving through upstate NY last weekend and saw a “smoke shop” billboard along the highway. Okay, I thought, cigars. Then passing the shop I realized that it was on Indian territory and the smokes was cigarettes without the state tax. Glad to see that NY state is subsidizing the Mohawks w/ its stupid cigarette tax.
You got that right...well Seattle wants to tax everybody. They’re trying to initiate a city income tax which targets those making over $250K/year I believe. There’s not only a state statute that says they can’t but it’s also in state constitution that they can’t do that. Of course that doesn’t matter to those knotheads
