President Donald Trump will award his first Medal of Honor as president to James McCloughan of the US Army for “conspicuous gallantry during the Vietnam War.”

In a ceremony planned for July 31, McCloughan will receive the honor for actions he took over the course of 48 hours in close-combat fighting against enemy forces in Vietnam in 1969.

McCloughan, who was 23 at the time, was serving as a private first class combat medic after being drafted. He voluntarily risked his life on nine separate occasions to rescue wounded and disoriented comrades. He suffered wounds from shrapnel and small arms fire during the encounter but refused medical evacuation to stay with his unit, according to a White House statement.....

I read that Mr. McCloughan and his wife were in a restaurant in Colorado when he got the call that he was being awarded. they both started to cry then he told the server why so she didn’t think they were fighting.

I hope that server gave him a big hug and jumped onto a chair to shout the news to all the other guests that they were dining in the presence of a hero.

He must have seen some terrible things. As youngsters we’re pretty durable and lack reference points, but with a lifetime of experience behind him, I think crying is what any sane man would have done.

President Harry S. Truman remarks on October 12, 1945 on awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor to 15 Service members...

“As I have told the rest of these young men who have been here before me, I would much rather have that Medal around my neck than to be President of the United States. It is the greatest honor that can come to a man. It is an honor that all of us strive for, but very few of us ever achieve.”

Presenting that Medal is the greatest honor of the Presidency.

Cause that’s how it is.
My best friend who died 11 years ago got his silver star 11 days before his death. He was a Cobra gunship pilot in Viet Nam

award himself a Medal of Honor
Wash your mouth out with soap.

Awarding yourself medals is utterly classless - why else would Obama do it? (Even he didn’t do that - what he did was have his subordinates give him an award).

And I’m betting until this call, he told few,if any, of his heroism. “Just doing my job”

The true heroes never talk.

I used to work with a guy who is a former Tier one Operator. I knew he was with the teams but nothing more. About ten years after we first met, he told me about being present at a major “event.”

Being a medic is a very dangerous job. Takes a special kind of person, compassionate and not feint of heart. God bless our medics.

A server? In Colorado? Maybe that's the one with Hilldebeast's "lost" emails on it?

Oh, I get it...a waitress! There I go again, thinking there's a difference between men and women.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Sorry. I failed. I used the term he used in the article not the proper and politically incorrect one.

I’ll be sure to yell out “serving wench” next time I’m out to dinner.

Mr. McCloughan was an amazing soldier, refusing to leave the battle in spite of being ordered to and he knew they were heavily outnumbered. 89 went in, 32 came out - some because he carried them across an open field dodging bullets.
