Attorney General Jeff Sessions is asking congressional leaders to undo federal medical marijuana protections that have been in place since 2014, according to a May letter that became public Monday.
The protections, known as the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, prohibit the Justice Department from using federal funds to prevent certain states "from implementing their own State laws that authorize the use, distribution, possession or cultivation of medical marijuana."
In his letter, first obtained by Tom Angell of Massroots.com and verified independently by The Washington Post, Sessions argued that the amendment would "inhibit [the Justice Department's] authority to enforce the Controlled Substances Act." He continues:
I believe it would be unwise for Congress to restrict the discretion of the Department to fund particular prosecutions, particularly in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially long-term uptick in violent crime. The Department must be in a position to use all laws available to combat the transnational drug organizations and dangerous drug traffickers who threaten American lives.
Sessions's citing of a "historic drug epidemic" to justify a crackdown on medical marijuana is at odds with what researchers know about current drug use and abuse in the United States. The epidemic Sessions refers to involves deadly opiate drugs, not marijuana. A growing body of research (acknowledged by the National Institute on Drug Abuse) has shown that opiate deaths and overdoses actually decrease in states with medical marijuana laws on the books.

“We need a return of morality based on the Christian value system which is based on selflessness.”
This I agree with. It doesn’t have anything to do with cannabis. But on its on, I agree with this statement.
“Marijuana is a very potent driver of self-centered childishness and apathy.”
Your evidence to validate this claim is?
“The vast majority of medical marijuana use is in truth recreational.”
Again, you make a definitive declaration without evidence to validate it. Please share with us how you came to make such a statement & upon what facts do you base it on.
If the AG wants to be of use, he should go after welfare frauds.
Yeah Jeffery, Marijuana is the big issue of our times.....Clueless. Damn boys with long hair!
Medical marijuana doesn’t fall into that category, unless you’re a lobbyist for pharmaceuticals.
Thanks for the ping.
On this issue, I believe Sessions is in error. Cannabis, as candidate Trump stated is a states issue. Sessions, like a lot of folks his age & older were fed “reefer madness” propaganda & came to believe it as fact.
Hopefully, Congress will continue to keep Sessions from pushing his personal agenda against cannabis.
I don't smoke the stuff as I can't stand the stench.
I suppose if I had to for medical reasons, if the results were worth the stench I might.
I was in the USAF when I was one of the few who didn't smoke it.
I never saw negative effects on anyone.
It mellowed out a few folks who were very violent when on booze, and unruly when not on pot.
There is the argument that it's a "gateway drug". Maybe it is now, because the person selling you one illegal drug might want to make more money selling you really bad ones.
If it was as available as beer in stores, chances are, you would never meet that person.
The only negative effects I've seen are memory loss and possible miscarriages.
If one is going to have a baby, both male and female should stay away from all drugs and booze.
Once the deed is done, the male can return, and when nursing is done, so can the female.
Sessions should be going after every democrat and RINO illegal activity with a passion and have no time for potheads.
Exactly. Plus it’s pretty hard to overdose on medical marijuana.
What planet did you come from?
The Washington Post. I would have to see the letter myself.

That’s a communist tactic you’re using against me. Remember what I said earlier:
Next to creating safe spaces on universities, the best weapons our geopolitical enemies could possibly perpetrate on this country is to increase marijuana use.
There are billions of dollars pushing the marijuana industry.
Marijuana does have legitimate medical use, in cases of severe cancer pain or lack of appetite. But the deception is in the way recreational use masquerades as medical use.
This is talking about medical marijuana. I’m not advocating people sitting around smoking pot.
Plus it’s a States rights issue. If States want to legalize cannabis for medical purposes, the Feds need to mind their own business. He’s AWOL right now on Immigration, bringing charges against known political and federal criminals. What he’s doing is ridiculous.
Get up, find a job and quit complaining? I guess you have never had cancer, epilepsy, or debilitating pain that MM helps, without the horrible side effects of pharmaceuticals. I’m not going to wish it on you, just pray you find a little empathy in your heart.
I suppose if I had to for medical reasons, if the results were worth the stench I might.
People aren't really smoking it much anymore these days. They vape or eat it. Doesn't smell nearly as bad.
A lot of doctors or other individuals who provide “medical marijuana cards” set up shop in cheap motels for a brief period, charge a flat fee of 50 or 100 or so dollars and make a killing.
Next to creating safe spaces on universities, the best weapons our geopolitical enemies could possibly perpetrate on this country is to increase marijuana use.
Plenty of rarely seen posters coming out on this thread pushing marijuana.
He recused himself from everything important going on as they try to impeach Trump... For this??
This old helpless coot has to go unless he grows a spine in his open hearing.
