When Becky and David Middleton, both 41, needed more space for their family of four children, ages 6 to 11, they moved just 10 blocks, paying $840,000 last April for an 1887 Victorian farmhouse with five bedrooms in Glen Ridge, N.J. A kitchen and bathroom renovation is underway. They have lived for 16 years in the 1.5-square-mile Essex County borough of around 7,500 with vintage homes and gaslit streets, wedged between the busier suburbs of Montclair and Bloomfield, and bordering the city of East Orange to the south.

What a surprise to see Glen Ridge, NJ on FR!!!
My DH was born here, and we’ve lived here over 50 years. Expensive town, but an exceptional one.
Why did Glen Ridge make mention on FR?
Non-descript? Ever been in Glen Ridge?
It’s a beautiful, conservative-leaning enclave. Small and cozy. I live in NJ, I heard it’s better than Montclair or Summit.
it’s still Jersey
No idea why this was posted and I am not clicking on the NYT link. Glen Ridge is a nice little town with some very stately older houses. Much more interesting than modern Mcmansions. I painted and plastered many of them on summer jobs in college. Also has some neighborhoods with more modest but well-maintained houses. But property taxes are insane and it is not far from some dicey areas of Orange, East Orange, etc.
It’s posted because these are beautiful places to visit and live. I visited Glen Ridge on Saturday, it was like visiting paradise. Leafy, working class community.
it would be of interest only to people planning on moving to this non-descript little community in NJ.

And paying a boatload of property tax.
Good safe schools for young families.
Regretted having to leave.
It is indeed a beautiful town with some grand old houses and lush, mature landscaping that will never be duplicated.
Glen Ridge is a beauty. Even the train station is majestic. Please visit N.J., Freepers, there is lots of beauty and majesty to be seen!!
Just watch out for the radium....
Yes I Have - live only few miles away......
Last year was paper with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton

Infamous for an incident almost 30 years ago. I have a long memory.
It is a very wealthy town; while many of us in NJ bemoan our high property taxes, this is a town that embraces them as a defense against the urban sh!tholes that are nearby. They are bulwarks against urban sprawl.
The town is known for the charming gas lamps and on a foggy night, it is beautiful. I think there are about 3000 gas lamps left as street lighting in the US. South Orange (nice town) has lots of them and Glen Ridge has over 600. On all streets, except the county road which passes thru the town.
My back yard borders a small patch of woods and often see deer families there. Even have a fox family. Yesterday one fox decided to curl up and take a long nap in the back yard.
And — a chicken coop next door. All this just 12 miles (the way the crow flies) from Manhattan.
However, this once very conservative town is changing, due to the influx of New Yorkers. They have come with their liberal vote. And because of the districting, my conservative vote means very little anymore. Sigh.
Yes — high taxes, but all kids walk to school. No buses. And the schools are one of the biggest attractions for living here.
True. Glen Ridge used to be one of the most conservative towns in Essex. It’s the Montclair liberals and New Yorkers.
Montclair is probably more liberal than Bloomfield.
Yes — Montclair has also had an influx of New Yorkers since the 70s. Right on a train line to the city, and a beautiful town — so a good choice for them. Plus you have to add the liberal educational influence.
Hi 148, how have you been???
