Melbourne siege being treated as terrorism (Victoria, Australia)
Sky News Australia ^ | 6th June 2017

Long-time criminal Yacqub Khayre is the terrorist behind the deadly Brighton siege that claimed the life of an innocent apartment clerk.

The Somalian-born man, 29, had served jail time over a violent burglary in 2012 and was on parole at the time of Monday's siege, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

Mr Ashton said he had been on parole since being released from prison last November and 'there was nothing wrong with his parole until yesterday.'

Khayre also spent 16 months on remand before being acquitted of the 2009 Holsworthy army barracks terror plot in Sydney.

He lived in the Melbourne suburb Roxburgh Park with his mother and police will search their home on Tuesday, as well as continue work at the Bay St serviced apartment block.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for Monday's incident, but Mr Ashton downplayed their statement.

'We're aware of, online, them having claimed responsibility, but then they always tend to jump up and claim responsibility every time something happens,' he told reporters.

'But he's also made statements last night around (rival organisation) al- Qaeda.'

Shouldn’t be treated as a terrorist. What she did was espionage and falls under a very different set of laws of crime and punishment, far more harsh that just being a terrorist. And because she violated our national security, she should be imprisoned for many years.

What on earth are you talking about? I can’t see how it connects at all to what I’ve posted.

I agree, Redwood has posted to the wrong thread - seems to be a response about the indictment of the NSA contractor.

One of these days a Western democracy will fully wake up to a common threat and the root cause of that threat. It certainly won't be France. From the looks of things it won't be Britain.Canada? Who knows. The US now has a Chief Executive who's fully awake...but her courts aren't.

That leaves Australia...

OK - that makes sense. I’ve done that myself. I was just a bit confused :)

Can't really see us doing any better a job. With Tony Abbott, I think we had a Prime Minister who might have done it (although he proved more timid in office than I liked - and that's part of what cost him) but with Turnbull - no way. And our courts are really no better than yours. Our High Court has actually blocked a lot of steps in the right direction over the years - the reason we process asylum seekers off shore in Nauru and Manus is because the High Court decided that once they set foot on Australian soil, they have all sorts of rights that Parliament never voted for, and can't overrule (because the High Court decides what the constitution 'says')

Redwood may be covfefe’d.

The intensity of news and events these past few days will do that to one.

Not a problem. I’ve done the same myself. I was just a bit confused.
