Gov’t sucks 101: Business license needed for teens to cut grass
Conservative Review ^ | 06/02/2017 | Chris Pandolfo

If your teenage kids are trying to make some money cutting grass this summer, government is there to ruin it for them.

A city ordinance in Gardendale, Ala., requires entrepreneurial teens to show a city-issued business license before they offer their lawn services for some extra summer cash.

According to ABC’s Birmingham affiliate, a business license in Gardendale costs $110. Parents are complaining that their kids aren’t making enough money to recoup the cost of the license.

"I have never heard of a child cutting grass had to have a business license," said Elton Campbell. Her granddaughter cuts grass around the neighborhood. "She charges one lady $20, and another lady $30, and another girl $40 besides what we pay her."

But licensed lawn maintenance professionals are threatening to alert city officials to Campbell’s granddaughter because she was cutting grass without a license.

This illustrates the shortcomings of the legal positivism under which we live. The power of the state is turned into nothing more than a proxy for established lawn care services who seek to oppress these “upstarts.”

do teenage kids do tasks such as cutting grass anymore

My son does some lawns, mostly for the nearest neighbors and a few elderly church members. DBA "Epic Fail Lawn Service." He's also Epic Fail Painting Service and Epic Fail Plumbing Service.

A mom and three sons up the street have a real lawn-care business, with a trailer and everything, but they charge more.

One of my girls does a lot of dog care.

I guess shoveling snow is out, too? They should hurry up and make that the law, asap, just in case it snows — in Alabama.

Don’t “pay” the kids. Give a free will offering.

"One day he came home from cutting lawns and asked us what does it mean “if you cut more than 5 lawns a week we will bury you in the desert."

I'd tell him, "It means I'm going with you next time you go out, and I want to meet whoever told you that."

My brother, who has more money than sense, happily pays a “lawn service” $110 a month in Noo Awlins to mow his postage-stamp-size lawn in Uptown. Any enterprising kid could do the work in 10 minutes every two weeks - but there are none such in that area.

I’m seeing a lot more white and black guys on landscaping crews in the lsat few months, and fewer Central American-looking folks. Nothing scientific, just general impressions.

How did that turn out? If I were his dad, there would have been further conversations with the “men” who were talking with my son. Then, my perspective would have included Buster, my large German Shepard, and my friend, Smith & Wesson. Today, I would have first added my Bible...guess I’m mellowing a bit.

They’re protecting some big donors, no doubt. I wonder if this can be challenged. It is undoubtedly unethical.

I wonder how many of the “legit” businesses have illegals working for them....

Might be an opportunity to call ICE. (Hint: If they all speak Spanish, and one speaks broken English, it’s a good chance that they are illegals and don’t belong in the country).

But licensed lawn maintenance professionals are threatening to alert city officials...

Here we see the root of the problem.

Some of those conniving evil homeowners and renters are trying to steal money from the lawn service companies by sneakily paying a kid cash to mow the lawn. There needs to be a law requiring every owner to have a contract with a lawn service company for which the city/county/state needs to set minimum fees and large fines to owners who sneak around the law by getting the kid next door to cut the grass..

Very very good!
