Los Angeles homeless numbers jump 23% in a year

The number of people homeless in the US city of Los Angeles has soared in the past year, a new report shows, despite efforts to combat the problem. The homeless population in the city grew 20% while the numbers for the wider Los Angeles County were even higher at 23%, the figures revealed. Experts say soaring rents and a high cost of living are major factors. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn described the figures as "staggering". "Homelessness in LA County has grown at a shocking rate," she said in a statement.

"Even as work is being done to get thousands of people off the street and into housing, more and more people are becoming homeless. It is clear that if we are going to end the homeless crisis, we need to stem the overwhelming tide of people falling into homelessness." The city of Los Angeles has long been known as the homeless capital of America and a special agency, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), was set up in 1993 to find a solution. In 2015 authorities declared a public emergency as the numbers sleeping rough soared. City officials committed $100m (£77m) to tackling the problem.

In its latest report, the LAHSA said there were 57,794 people homeless in the county during its survey in January, compared to 46,874 in 2016. In the city there were 34,189 with no permanent roof over their heads, the report said, compared to 28,464 the year before. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said there was "no sugarcoating the bad news". "It's impossible to wrap your head around the numbers," he told reporters, adding that soaring rents and the city's high cost of living were partly to blame. "We can't let rents double every year," he told reporters.

I will be happy to use my tax dollars to procure busses to send all homeless people from my town there, to make the number increase even faster

Why it’s like clockwork.

Homelessness hasn’t been this bad since, well, George Bush was president.

This must be a misprint. They surely meant to say that it's increased 23% in the last 4 months and 11 days.

“We can’t let rents double every year,” he told reporters.

Interesting mindset......Is rent control in LA’s future???

And, does he really think all these mentally unbalanced unstable people who are homeless, are there just because they can’t pay the rent???

I’ve seen reports which show homeless tend to have lots of problems which resulted in their condition; it is extremely misleading for him to say that the expensive LA real estate market causes homelessness.

Just my observations, but when Reagan was POTUS, the homeless issue was very prominent in news, art and media. That persisted into GHWB term. Once Clinton was elected it vanished from the zeitgeist. Then GWB was elected and it was a problem again. Then with Obama elected homelessness was cured faster than shovel ready jobs appeared. Now just a few months into Trump’s tenure and homelessness is ballooning again.

In LA you get mostly slightly warm days and cool nights, perfect weather if your homeless, not to mention great benefits for just hanging out. All the bums I knew in LA had money in their pockets except for the ones whose minds were almost all gone.

I’m glad I live in an area that can have truly miserable weather.

No $hit Eric! But you would think that he would have long ago seen where the trend line was heading. He’s not doing anything about it because to do so would mean wholesale deportations of the Mexican effluent he grovels over on a daily basis.

What do they expect. Beautiful weather, nice parks to sleep in and hang all day, cheap drugs, liberal handouts of other peoples money, ok to panhandle on every corner and plenty of white guilt liberals to give you booze and drug money, what more could a BUM as for ? .

Incidentally we need to bring back the term BUM.

Ok, Garcetti, go ahead and institute rent control as NYC did for decades. Watch your middle class fly away leaving only the rich and the poor. What do you care? Even if you do understand the principles of supply and demand or letting the marketplace set prices, you obviously don’t care about the poor, the middle class or the rich. What do you care about?

Lots of articles on homelessness have been written in the last 8 years-—they are all over Google.

We own commercial property in the “Wine Country.” Have for 17 years. Now, thanks to California’s legislature “decriminalizing” trespass from a misdemeanor to an “infraction,” we have been having “guests” almost nightly, and they ARE NOT Mexican! They are largely white trash, but as you point out, they have money. So now we have had to install several security cameras that “alert” on motion and send us an e-mail.
Last night, around midnight we had a “couple” show up. The alert woke us up and we called the cops who made them leave. They were using a utility outlet to charge their phones and iPad. They even get up on their luggage and unscrew the light bulbs in the recessed fixtures so they can sleep. The good news is that the cameras are IR at night, so they “see” them anyway.
