I hear those are effective on helicopters, too.
Indeed. Though the Elephant Gun wasn't particularly useful against anything much more current than very early WWII amphibious and light tanks, it still had some utility against armored cars and personnel carriers. And then along came armed helicopters, worse, armored armed helo gunships like the Soviet Hind D/Gorbach.
Though the L/39 on the ground mount skids wasn't particularly helpful, the Finnish *fencepost mount* allowed enough elevation to handle flying targets, as well as enough power to completely ruin a helicopter's engine. Add it a 20-round magazine, and their usefulness was not quite at an end.
And so the things have been dragged kicking and screaming into the XXI Century. Ammo is now running $35-#50 per round, but there are a few things that can be done about that, too.
