The number of concealed carry permits in the United States has topped 15 million over the last year, according to data collected by the Crime Prevention Research Center.
Thats the largest one-year increase ever in the number of permits issued, according to the research center. In July 2016, the center reported that 14.5 million people had concealed handgun permits. As of May of this year, the number is already 15.7 million.
John Lott, founder of the group and a Fox News columnist, said several states, including Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Texas, have seen a big jump in the number of gun permits issued. There are several reasons for the increase most notably, a rise in women and minorities seeking to purchase handguns, Lott said.
"I think you're continuing to see a change in the composition of people who go and get permits," Lott said. "Women are growing at a much faster rate than men."
Between 2012 and 2016, Lott said, the growth rate for women was twice as much as it was for men. He also said minorities are purchasing handguns at a higher rate compared to previous years. . . .

Ping.
I’ll look forward to demand for permits plummeting, when constitutional carry is the Law of the Land.
I remember in the 80s when my friend openly carried a 357 magnum on his belt here in Broward country Florida. It was actually open carry then. Wow how times have changed.
Amazing as it may seem, here in Minnesota, it’s carry any way you like.
Can’t be. I was under the impression of more guns equal more crime. Was I wrong? Where did I get this idea?
Broward county was civilized back then.....
If you practice and can load fast, NM you can have unloaded handguns concealed. You can open carry loaded or unloaded, unloaded concealed, but concealed handgun loaded needs a permit. Plus it’s a ‘no duty to notify LEO of carrying’, but it’s always good practice to notify. In this day and age where it takes 2 seconds to load it’s a wonder folks mess with the permit. If you think you’re going to have real trouble just open carry loaded.
Agreed. The good news for rats is that all those ccw gun owners have registered now.
Hopefully, it turns out like most govt programs: once the people get used to it, they won’t give it up.
Minnesota!? But is it Constitutional carry or Permitted carry? I know Minnesota does NOT have a reciprocal agreement with Florida. I wish they did. Minnesota is where my extended family still lives and we’re going to visit (from FL) this summer, and I understood that I could not carry there with my FL CWP.
I know North Dakota is now a Constitutional carry state
Permit. There are classes offered here to not only get a Minnesota permit, but also a Florida permit which gets you into a lot of other states.
Just not Minnesota.
Crazy,No?
Thanks, that’s how I understood it too. Crazy? Yes.
Interesingly, this article notes that the number of permits in AZ increased. AZ is a Constitutional Carry state.
I continue to have mixed emotions about concealed carry. I agree that tactically speaking, its a superior methodology to open carry. However its greatly inferior from a strategic point of view: out of sight is out of mind.
If 10% of the adult populace consistently open carried, both violent crime and gun control would be bad memories.
(Hmmmm. Sounds like a tagline)
Ah luvs dat map. May the trend continue...to the severe angst of the anti-gun crowd.
