Elton John: MTV Era Produced Many Untalented Musicians
Variety ^ | 5-22-2017 | Leo Barraclough

Elton John told an audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday that the MTV generation had promoted many musicians who didn’t deserve the attention, but he also paid tribute to the positive role that music videos have played in the music business.

John, who was on-stage with his long-term song-writing partner Bernie Taupin, said: “We were before the MTV generation and I’m glad we were because we were real artists. The MTV generation brought along a lot of people who were great but a lot of people who just made videos. So a lot of the artistry went out of the music.”

The singer, who was answering questions from Spike Lee at the winners’ presentation for a new music-video competition, added: “Visuals — whether it is a painting, a drawing, a piece of film, a video — enhance music. You get to use your imagination; you get into it.”

He was just pop fluff.

Well, Elton she's really keen!

She's got electric boots, a mohair suit.

You know, I read it in a magazine.

They cannot project their voices so they stick the microphone right next to their mouth and sing mushy. Nasally.

Yes she is, as were so many singers from decades ago singing well-played, well-crafted songs. I have a Johnny Mercer collection and I really like Buddy Rich singing “Goody Goody” and Bing Crosby singing “Jeepers Creepers.”

Lot of classic artists on iTunes top 100 jazz albums. Miles Davis and Nina Simone are faves. Ella has a couple on the list. Coltrane. Others long gone. Still sell respectable numbers.

*** “Frank Zappa” ***

Only Concert I have ever walked out on ... and 1/2 the folks there were in front or behind ...

I was 17 and I did not appreciate him ... now it is different and I do not know what Contractual BS preceded his really terrible performance (he just stood on the stage like he was a Mistro waving around a couple o wands doing classical music while everyone booed)

He was more complex and better than a 17 year old need be Judging

I recently discovered on line that there is a large fan base that believes Louis Prima was the greatest thing ever. Never knew that.

There is nothing more subjective than Music and Art. It is all in the eye of the beholder.

There has always been good bands, bad bands and conversely, bad music, and good music.

Some of the MTV era stuff was pretty good and I would agree there was some that was bad. But, so what?

I agree with what you have said but using Madonna as an example is inaccurate. I am no fan of her but she wrote a lot of her own lyrics and she did work very hard to get where she got. MTV definitely helped her career but she would have made it anyway. She is a very smart business women and she knows how to create controversies to help sell albums.

She is not a no talent bimbo like most of those out there.

*** “And Gaga is a VERY good singer” ***

Hell I am a very good singer, I can mimic but I can’t come up with my own stuff... I am not an Artist, Songwriter or Stylist.

I have had many people comment “We thought it was the Jukebox until we looked at the stage”

Art/Promotion/Marketing can even sell RAP as music... Singing Talent is a bonus?

In the Music World, it is tough to beat Toby Keith, (look it up)

Eddie Van Halen did the guitar solo on the song “Beat It”.

“It is all in the eye of the beholder”

While it is true that there is no arguing with taste, the fact that some people like bad music doesn’t mean that it’s not bad music.

It is possible to use right reason to establish criteria for value in music, and to compare the efforts of musicians to those criteria.
