Whenever I click the “donate” button I get this message:

Your Connection is Not Private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from secure.freerepublic.com.

This never happened to me before and I have all the virus and malware protection. What’s up?

It’s secure. We use the industry standard sha-1 encryption method and have been using it for 20 years with no problem. But now Google, in it’s infinite wisdom, has decided sha-1 is no longer good enough and has “deprecated” it, flagging all sha-1 certificates as “not secure” even if paid-up, still valid and still in force. Our sha-1 secure server continues to securely encrypt our donation transactions just as it always has.

But to satisfy google (and now firefox, et al) we have paid the ransom fee and purchased sha-256 security certificates. John will upgrade as soon as he gets everything else caught up.

Meanwhile, if you have the windows 10 default browser (Edge) on your system it handles sha-1 just fine with no error messages. Or you can click the “Advanced” override and proceed to secure.freerepublic.com anyway if you wish. Your transaction will be encrypted by our secure server.

Praying John gets the sha-256 certificate installed soon.
