An overwhelming 82 percent of research papers produced by academics in the humanities are never cited, according to a recent study. According to Inside Higher Ed, citations are the primary measure of a papers scholarly impact. The humanities, which include anthropology, archaeology, history, law and politics, literature, and the arts, has faced an overwhelmingly low citation rate in recent years. Recent studies have suggested that over 80 percent of humanities paper are never cited.

Not fair to the others to be lumped in together with "literature and the arts," where papers are NEVER cited. Well, not cited in 99% of the cases would be my guess.
You mean like a paper discussing the academic performance of inner city youth as it correlates to access to organic and gmo free food and bike paths?
Surprising that medical research papers aren’t included in this. Medical ‘research’ may be the most suspect of all.
Well, as someone that HAS written Humanities papers AND has had them cited, there’s several reasons why:
1. There are a huge amount of journals NOT on EBSCOhost, etc.
2. A lot of papers are simply analysis and not worthwhile new theory.
3. Most writers are told to stick to “real” sources and so they cite established critics.
And the 18% that are referenced refer to fraudulent studies.
Yeah, it’s because most of it is liberal bull$hit that they pulled out of their a$$ without any basis in fact.
That’s because they are written on topics that do not matter in the slightest. Oh, Haitian Creole has irregular verb conjugation in the past tense? Oh, it’s only 13% of them? Fascinating! Why do you think... oh, some borrowing from Alsation French due to the portion of slave owners whose roots were from Alsace? REALLY!?! Wow, mind blown, DO tell me more, professor...
Thanks to libs, the lib arts are no linger academic.
STEM folks fart in their general direction.
There is good medical research out there. As for “Gender Studies”, “Critical Race Theory”, “African American Studies” and the rest of the liberal nonsense, one shovel full of horse manure is worth more than everything ever published in those fields. At least the manure can produce roses.
Social Science - letting rich white girls (like Chelsea Clinton) become scientists cause math is hard!!
(Disclaimer - I have an advanced degree in a social science field. I also have an advanced degree in an engineering field, and an undergrad in business. I like to think I’m well-rounded, LOL)
PHD should never have been part of the humanities.
I did graduate work in the 70’s in ag education. All the research were surveys about how important ag education was.
I was part of a million dollar grant from the dept of education. Was so frustrated I went into the dept head and said, “either this is a bunch of bullshit or I don’t understand what is going on here.” He looked at me and said, “What are you going to do about it?” I left, sans higher degree.
It's not just that they do not linger on academics. They don't even pass through academics.
Most are worth nothing.
Poor use of statistics is just the symptom, not the problem. Too much current research in the arts and humanities is tied solely to tenure track publishing requirements.
They are quick efforts to confirm current academic biases in order to add publication credit to a tenure seeking academic's CV. They are not serious attempts to understand either human history, philosophy, the arts, or other aspects of the human condition.
Serious attempts to challenge academic and political orthodoxy, as well as examinations of evidence for truly new insights are few and far between.
Believe Aristotle classified `law’ as a trade, like plumbing, because the practice had been so corrupted by sophists.
There’s a lot of that going around now.
I’d like to see a paper done on the impact of liquor desserts vs. contentment of the populace.
There’s gotta be grant money available for such a thing and I’m 6 miles from the nearest ABC store.
And it’s also closed on Sundays.
Concur. I have seen far too many papers that use stats for little more than to prove that the author has taken a stats course. My thesis used very little in the way of statistics as formulation would do nothing to prove our thesis, so the only stats I used dealt with raw numbers of radio sets currently in use by MAGTF commanders.
I am shocked!
Shocked that 18% of humanities papers ARE referenced.
