Among the diplomats meeting here in Bonn, there's a recognition that the person who's really key to the future progress of climate talks is not in Germany but in the White House some 6,500km (4,000 miles) away. It's not you Mr Trump, it's your official first daughter! One delegate here trilled: "What are we going to do about Ivanka?" He wasn't alone. In most of the conversations I've had here in Bonn, one name is mentioned with a nodding mixture of reverence and hope. For rich and poor countries, she's seen by many as the best bet for keeping the US in the Paris climate agreement. But is this the true state of affairs? Or just the delusion of delegates, who, in fairness, don't get out much. "It's crazy times, and we're trying to influence with all the tools and tactics at our disposal," said Liz Gallagher from environmental think tank, E3G, and a long time participant in these talks.
"My colleagues tell me that Ivanka has been going around and backing up the Paris agreement, going round speaking to cabinet members and trying to get them onside on this issue," she said. "She's been doing more so than others like (Secretary of State) Rex Tillerson who have said they're okay with Paris, but haven't actively championed it."
It's not just the people on the ground here who are fervently trying to get a message to Ivanka, Environmental campaigners around the US and the world are being urged to get in touch with the White House and try to speak to the the woman who has reportedly been put in charge of a review of US climate policy.

If we stay in the Paris Agreement, energy prices in the US will be higher. If we withdraw and other countries stay in, energy prices in the US will be lower than in the other countries, and we will be more competitive. Companies will locate here instead of the EU. Hmmmm, what should we do?

That’s exactly why she should not be involved.
Things like this are the reason why I'll never fully support Trump. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner need to be seen and not heard. Bannon is right. They are liberal Democrats with the President's ear. He wasn't elected to be a liberal New York Democrat.
Sadly, the answer may be yes.
My understanding of the Paris deal is that it’s a nondeal. Each country pledged to do what it wants to “combat” global warming. So, Trump does what he wants, which is not much. Am I missing something?
If Trump decides strategically to stay in the agreement, it’s because it’s voluntary and unenforceable. How Trump it would be to get leverage elsewhere by staying in as he furiously works to increase fossil energy production at the expense of clean eagle killing energy, surge US carbon spewing manufacturing and gut stupid environmental regulations. Still, I prefer he pull out, and think he will.
That the treaty will be reinvented and interpreted by US courts so as to be binding on the US. It is why Obama did it. It may be voluntary to make a pledge but once the pledge is made it could be found to be binding. Want to take your chances in a US District Court?
Let’s hope not.
It occurred to me the other day that President Trump may know exactly what he is doing with Ivanka and Jared, and that we may be wasting time worrying about it.
I thought about Trump’s Dad’s advice to him, about “taking the lumps out”.
So, isn’t it possible that he is using young Ivanka and Jared to do just that? Sending her to the Paris talks to see and chat with everyone, charming them with her poise and beauty, all the while saying nothing of significance... a lump taken out when we do nothing of substance on this global warning nonsense.
Same with Jared, he is sent out to give millennials the idea that Trump might listen to his opinion on whatever, and take it into consideration. Of course, Trump just might not, but maybe the next time Jared will be more convincing?
Just the fact that it annoys a lot of us should be a signal that he is moving chess pieces around on the board.
Consider that there is nothing wrong with listening to liberal democrats - after all, once in a blue moon, they might trigger a good idea.
Listening doesn’t imply doing. Watch what Trump does, for that is what matters.
Not in a time when Trump Derangement Disorder is sweeping the judiciary and they just make up ways to rule against him.
In a time of sanity I'd say sure. This thing was never ratified by the Senate and is not law.
