WASHINGTON – The Centers for Disease Control is warning of the emergence of a far deadlier tick-related virus than Lyme Disease – one that kills 10 percent of those infected and permanently disables the other 50 percent.

It’s called POW for short, or Powassan, and it, like Lyme, is carried by deer.

Recent cases have been noted in the Northeast U.S. and the Great Lakes states.

The virus can cause inflammation of the brain, leading to death in 10 percent of cases and permanent disability in 50 percent of cases.

Signs and symptoms of infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, weakness, confusion, seizures, and memory loss, according to the CDC. Long-term neurological problems may occur. There is no specific treatment, but people with severe POW virus illnesses often need to be hospitalized to receive respiratory support, intravenous fluids, or medications to reduce swelling in the brain.

I’m not sure how many ticks four hens will catch.

I have four dozen or so and I make them forage when the weather is warm. When there’s nothing much outdoors for them to eat I give them all of the pellets and corn chops they can eat. When things turn green outside I cut way back on their rations.

lyme disease sucks. Hope you got the antibiotic for it but why give a vaccine when the dog already had the disease? Why get a rabies shot every year? Are there that many types of rabies? Just wondering.

“””A Lyme sufferer told me that guinea hens eat ticks. I wonder if chickens do.”””

YES chickens do eat ticks........Live in a tick infested area and had at 1 time up to 45 pet chickens free range on 2 acres................they keep the tick population down!!! But the chickens ended up being nice snacks for the hawks and snakes :(

What about wild turkeys? I had a flock of them in my front yard eating any thing insect.

To judge from the prints they visit regularly fattening up from the winter fast.

Just antibiotics and anti-inflammatories now. (This is a problem for me because, I suffer from migraines and used to basically be addicted to Excedrin and Advil, which caused rebound headaches.) I'm also doing acupuncture and swimming. Beyond that there are DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs) such as Methotrexate, and a glucocorticoid, but that comes after I'm disease free. At least my heart doesn't seem to be damaged by this, although losing some weight would be useful for everything.
At any rate, take ticks seriously.

“I swear they jump out of trees on you if you walk under a limb.”

That’s exactly what they do.
