China urged U.S. to fire Pacific Command chief Harris in return for pressure on North Korea
BEIJING China urged the United States to sack the head of the U.S. Pacific Command in return for exerting more pressure on North Korea amid concerns over its growing nuclear and missile threats, a source close to U.S.-China ties said Saturday.
The Chinese leadership headed by President Xi Jinping made the request, through its ambassador in the United States, to dismiss Adm. Harry Harris, known as a hard-liner on China, including with respect to the South China Sea issue, the source said.
Chinas envoy to the United States, Cui Tiankai, conveyed the request to the U.S. side, to coincide with the first face-to-face, two-day meeting between President Donald Trump and Xi in Florida from April 6, but the Trump administration likely rejected it, the source said.
China is a longtime economic and diplomatic benefactor of North Korea.
As the head of Pacific Command, Harris, who was born in Japan and raised in the United States, plays a vital role in the security of the region.
He was responsible in ordering last month the dispatch of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to waters near off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force amid signs the North was preparing to test-fire another ballistic missile or conduct a sixth nuclear test.
The Trump administration has called for exerting maximum pressure on North Korea to prod it to give up its nuclear and missile programs. The administration has said all options including a military strikes remain on the table.
Harris has pushed for the U.S. deployment of the advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system to South Korea. China has opposed the deployment, saying it could undermine its security interests and the strategic balance of the region.
He has also called for continuing U.S. freedom of navigation operations in the contested South China Sea. Overlapping territorial claims, as well as land construction and militarization of outposts in disputed areas in the sea, remain a source of tension in the region.
According to the source, Cui also asked the Trump administration not to label China as a currency manipulator. As per the request, the United States did not label China as such, in light of Beijings role in helping Washington deal with the North Korean issue.
P!
Crazy stuff. If we let China start picking our military commanders we will have surrendered.
Here’s the rumored, unconfirmed demands Kim wants.....but of course there’s a lot of propganda on both sides flowing....still interesting just the same....but I doubt if they’re going to negotiate at all on his disarming his Nuclear Progras....even if he says he will he has never stopped thus far.....
The four terms Kim Un wants:
.... unconditional financial aid of $600 billion a year for the next 10 years ...(jointly raised by China, South Korea, the United States, Japan and Russia)
.... lifting ‘all’ U.N. and international sanctions on N.Korea
.... settlement of the Washington-Pyongyang peace treaty
.... promise the safety of the Kim Jong-un regime.
600 billion a year for 10 years? that’s 6 trillion.
pretty big demand.
Where’s Michael Corleone when you need him? :)
Where’s the satire disclaimer? This sounds like something cooked up on a Seinfeld episode.
Tell China we just re-targeted half of our nuclear missiles on their cities and if the Norks do anything we will concider them accomplices and blow their asses off the earth too.
....600 billion a year for 10 years? thats 6 trillion...
Let Obama write a check. Hes good at paying terrorists.
When you are being blackmailed, the demands never go away.
The little fat boy isnt dealing with 97 pound weakling Obama or Billy Jeff anymore.
I’m not surprised there’s various versions of this....but the version I heard was Kim wouldn’t even begin disarming until AFTER 3 yrs. of his conditions being met.
I just don’t believe the US, S.Korea nor Japan and Russia are going to settle for any deal......it’ll be disarm without any conditions and inspectors allowed in. ..or they will come in and do it for him.
Gee, I hope it's nothing serious.
Negotiations 101. What do you ask for - What do you want - What do you settle for. Most Americans tend to be pretty bad at negotiation - they start with a win-win proposal, and negotiate down from there. Trump appears to be fairly good. Bush was bad. Asians are almost always good.
I just dont believe the US, S.Korea nor Japan and Russia are going to settle for any deal......itll be disarm without any conditions and inspectors allowed in. ..or they will come in and do it for him.
...and south korea will be attacked?
I’m thinking Trump will get rid of this nutjob.
He had his chance to take the south while Obama was in, he didn’t make his move and now he has to go.
He’s definitely scared of Trump, just like the domestic commies are.
I wonder where China’s missiles are pointed at? All US cities?
The only verification that will work with North Korea is a series of smoking, radioactive holes in the ground.
Kims been on very shaky ground regarding his rise to leader of N.Korea among the people. Which is why he resorted to terror and killings about 3 yrs. ago.....
One of ‘his’ greatest desires, apart from being recognized as a nuclear state.....is acknowledgment that he is the rightful heir and Leader of N.Korea 'by' International Leaders....He's had none visit his country and no public visitations.
.... That's why he's taking hostages now.....he knows once a deal is made for their release we will send dignitaries to pick them up....which Kim will field as a show of power to his people that he can bring the USA leadership to heel. Just like his father did with Clintons visit to escort hostages out.
See how they portrayed it as an Official Presidential Visit rather than picking up the hostages to take them safely out. Kims conditions and we met them....
