An off-duty police officer working a downtown Tarpon Springs car show shot and killed a man Saturday whom the officer said came at him with a knife, the department said.
Tarpon Springs Police: Officer fatally shot man armed with knife Off-duty cop was working a car show in downtown Tarpon Springs FDLE, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will investigate incident
Just after 1:30 p.m., the officer was flagged down by citizens and alerted to a "suspicious" man on a bicycle in the area of Tarpon and Safford avenues. They described the man as wearing an orange jacket with the hood pulled over his head, Tarpon Springs Police said in a news release.
The officer made contact with the man, whom the officer said provided a fake name. The man provided another last name, which the officer called in over the police radio. The radio went silent for a moment, then the officer could be heard saying, "Shots fired, shots fired," according to the news release. The officer then said over the radio that the man had come at him with a knife.
The man was taken to Florida Hospital North Pinellas, where he was pronounced dead. The officer was not injured.
There were numerous witnesses to the incident, police said.
The names of the man and the officer have not been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate with help from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office forensics unit, police said.
Why didn’t the cop shoot the knife out of his hand?
sure going to be interesting what the video shows
>The officer was not injured.
Good. One more POS down and out of the business of harming others. I am sorry this good officer had to to take out the trash but I thank the officer all the same.
Next?
One of my best friends had a 64 Impala. Two door hardtop with a 300 HP 327 with powerglide.
Isn’t Tarpon springs the place that used to have a lot of Greek sponge divers?
Yup, in fact after the show I met up with my lovely wife and daughter and son-in-law there for some fine, albeit pricey Greek cuisine. Mines got the 250hp 327 backed up by a Powerslide. It’ll pass almost anything but a gas station.
Probably.
Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demitrios goes there every 6tth of January for the "Great Blessing of the Waters".
Hard to believe a two speed automatic could perform as well as those old powerglides.
I always enjoyed visiting Tarpon Springs.
Powerglides are old technology, but they’re GOOD old technology. Rumor has it that GM is working on a special order COPO Camaro with an updated version of the old slushbox. What’s old is new again.
They are still sought after by Drag Racers.
In law enforcement training they have a subject come at you with a rubber knife from across a large room. It’s amazing how quickly that rubber knife is in your ribs.
It was sarcasm on my part.
I am well acquainted with the Tueller drill.
My wife used to have an old Toyota Corolla coupe with a hemi and 2-speed auto. Performance? It sounded like you might throw a rod if you went more than 65 mph.
I’ve investigated three cases where that happened . Actually the perp’s weapon was a gun in two cases and a knife in the third. Bullets through the hand in each case.
It wasn’t intentional but rather the product of a breakdown in training. The officers’ eyes were fixed on the threat, the weapon. That’s where the bullets went. In fairness, in one case the perp was firing through the windshield of his car and the only part of him visible was his face and the gun hand directly in front of it.
That case and the knife were fatal. Two of the three officers who fired at the guy with the knife aimed center mass. In the third case the perp was drawing the weapon from the front of his waistband. Three rounds from two guns in about a 6” group, right in the family jewels. He didn’t die, just wished he did.
All well and good, but do you know what a Thuer conversion is?
Greek sponge divers? Is this another job that has been outsourced? Don't we have anymore American sponge divers? Now the Greeks have to do it? 😄😆😀 (joke)
Apples.
Oranges.
You are correct sir. When I was in prison, we practiced this. The dude with the knife succeeded more often than not. We rarely got our pepper spray or baton out fast enough. I was not successful, not even once. Now, I just keep my trusty bolo knife sharp. 😀
I know. Just being silly.
