Republicans eat another 'crap sandwich'
Washington Times ^ | 4 May 2017 | Charles Hurt

Congratulations, House Republicans. You just passed the second-worst socialized medicine bill in American history.

And, if it passes the U.S. Senate, you will own the disaster formerly known as Obamacare — just in time for the 2018 elections.

It will be called “Trumpcare” or “Ryancare” or GOPcare.” And it will still be government-run health care brought to you by the experts at the U.S. Postal Service and Veterans Affairs Department.

To be sure, there are some great aspects of this bill. It makes Obamacare less terrible. It includes Medicare reforms that will save innocent taxpayers and our grandchildren many billions of dollars over future years.

That one part of GOPcare is the first decent thing Congress will have accomplished in the past decade (other than confirming Justice Neil M. Gorsuch).

But will it be worth it?

After all, Republicans have just finally conceded the entire argument against socialized medicine in America. They have officially retreated from the belief that liberty, self-governance and free markets are ultimately the best way to provide the most people with the best health care.

By supporting government-run health care — even if it is a little less government-run than Obamacare — Republicans have, in fact, endorsed government-rationed health care. Remember those evil death panels we used to all be opposed to?

Well, now you are the death panels.

What about politically? Will it be worth the carnage at the polls?

With this, Republicans give up all claims to campaign against Democrats for foisting disastrous Obamacare on the American people.

As usual these days, it was President Trump who had the sharpest and most farsighted political instincts on the whole matter when he said Republicans would be better off just letting Obamacare collapse of its own weight.

The left wins because they will settle for incremental gains on their journey. Our side insists on purity and uses purity as litmus tests. We’d rather lose 80/20 and say we stood for our principals.

They’re “progressive” because they’re always marching in the direction of their purity, and have done better than us in the last two generations. Perhaps we should take a page from their playbook.

The questions we ask now are important.

I prefer “OK, now what might the next step be?” to “what kind of idiots are you that this wasn’t a premium fix?”

Good observation: our modern conservatives forgot that patience is a virtue.

It is a humbling truth that because of the original sin — the fall in Eden — this world always will have some evil in it. That’s why God has to do away with both our earthly bodies and this world to make room for a permanent heaven. In the meantime, having accepted the divine proffer of salvation, we gather all the goodness we can from God and press against the evil, knowing that what we will get is progress against it but, in fact, never perfection in this mortal coil.

What calls itself progressive today scored a P.R. coup by the name. By looking to progress, the left at least kept a grasp upon the virtue of patience.

I still think this is the plan. The bill yesterday was just to delay so Trump can get on with his tax and budget plan.

The bill will be rejected after the Senate makes it unworkable even to the Rino’s. Trump will let ObamaCare implode on it's own so the Pups can run on it's demise in 2018. The Rat's will still own ObamaCare.

I’m not sure that, without a paradigm shift to better embrace patience, it would be any better than what we are seeing now, i.e. “what kind of fools are you?”

The only thing that matters is what people and employers are paying for insurance next year. That's it. The Democrats can't spin it as a disaster if people are actually saving money, just as they couldn't spin it as a success when people saw their costs go through the roof under Obamacare.

It's all about the wallet and the purse, folks.

One reason why it is difficult to perceive this bill as a “first step” is the recent history of the GOP. When Obama was in office, the GOP sent at least one “full repeal” bills to his desk for the obligatory veto while crowing about how that same course of action would be how they would do it once they also held the Presidency.

We now know that was a lie.

Similarly, Ryan pushed the idea that last fall’s continuing budget resolution was a stop-gap to bridge the election and installation of a new, much more conservative President. Now, we see the Dems laughing about how they rolled the GOP in the latest spending bill.

Simply put, the GOP has squandered any trust they may once have enjoyed because they promised the sky while digging a deeper hole to hide away from actually governing.

Politicians lie. All of them, IMO. But the GOP has taken to wholesale reneging on promises made in many people’s eyes. Instead of standing up and supporting the border wall/fence - which was a central promise of the Trump campaign - the GOP congress instead accepted and/or endorsed a spending bill with zero funds to start the process of building the wall that was authorized during the W administration (including supporting votes by Obama and Clinton).

To see this as a first step in a long journey, one must accept that the congressional GOP is planning to head in the same direction as we, the people, wish to go.

Yup. Glass half empty! Glass half empty! And we’ll rub it in until you’re too sore to do anything at all! While Satan laughs at the paralysis. Which you yourself abet.

Is the GOP over the new force heralded by Donald Trump, or is the new force over the GOP?

I think progressives at least grasped that patience was a virtue, when you are gathering forces.

How will the president escape responsibility for some of this when he pushed so hard to get it passed?

This appears to be a bad bill based on what I have read here and what little I have heard but I have not researched it and read too much about the details yet.

This is going to get labeled as “Trumpcare” would be my bet.

Thanks - far too many live in their own fantasy world where they think we can just snap out fingers and go directly from the Nanny State to a pure Constitutional State, letting huge numbers suffer and die when the government support rug is yanked from under them with no transition, and all will be just hunky-dory.

Have you read the whole Health Care bill yet or are you getting your information from the mainstream media of what is in the bill?

Let’s see:

* The mandate is gone, for both individuals & employers.

* The taxes to fund this thing are gone.

* a far more sensible way of dealing with pre-existing conditions is in place.

This is as much as we could expect from a sitting congress, hoping to not become a minority overnight, as the Dems did.

Sometimes, we conservatives at FR assumes everyone agrees with us, or that there are more of us than there really are. But as the vote yesterday showed, not even all Republicans agree with us. Those who believe that a bill that ignores pre-existing conditions (which is welfare, not insurance) would ever see the light of day, are living in a fantasy world.

It was never going to happen.

Anyone see the list of taxes this bill would get rid of?

Here you. This is why the liberals from Follywood to NY City/DC are going crazy with what was passed in the house:

List of Obamacare Taxes Repealed
Americans for Tax Reform ^ | May 4, 2017 | John Kartch

The American Health Care Act (HR 1628) passed by the House today reduces taxes on the American people by over $1 trillion. The bill abolishes the following taxes imposed by Obama and the Democrat party in 2010 as part of Obamacare:

-Abolishes the Obamacare Individual Mandate Tax which hits 8 million Americans each year.
-Abolishes the Obamacare Employer Mandate Tax. Together with repeal of the Individual Mandate Tax repeal this is a $270 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes Obamacare’s Medicine Cabinet Tax which hits 20 million Americans with Health Savings Accounts and 30 million Americans with Flexible Spending Accounts. This is a $6 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes Obamacare’s Flexible Spending Account tax on 30 million Americans. This is a $20 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes Obamacare’s Chronic Care Tax on 10 million Americans with high out of pocket medical expenses. This is a $126 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes Obamacare’s HSA withdrawal tax. This is a $100 million tax cut.
-Abolishes Obamacare’s 10% excise tax on small businesses with indoor tanning services. This is a $600 million tax cut.
-Abolishes the Obamacare health insurance tax. This is a $145 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes the Obamacare 3.8% surtax on investment income. This is a $172 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes the Obamacare medical device tax. This is a $20 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes the Obamacare tax on prescription medicine. This is a $28 billion tax cut.
-Abolishes the Obamacare tax on retiree prescription drug coverage. This is a $2 billion tax cut.

As a presidential candidate in 2008, Barack Obama had promised repeatedly that he would not raise any tax on any American earning less than $250,000 per year. He broke the promise when he signed Obamacare. With the passage of the House GOP bill, tens of millions of middle income Americans will get tax relief from Obamacare’s long list of tax hikes.
