Before Beth and Michael Clark came along, Rocky was just a feeble, elderly dog who may have otherwise never found a home to live out the rest of his days. Luckily, the couple laid eyes on him one day when dropping off donations at the Anne Arundel County Animal Shelter in Maryland.

God bless the ones who care for the “unlovable” things in life.

We have adopted from there before, we are suckers when we hear of an older dog turned in. I imagine some are turned in for good reasons, but most times, IMO, its because the owners are part of the throwaway society that never considered the animal a part of the family. The female we got from there had a great 2 years before cancer took her. Almost immediately after losing her, we picked up a male from the Baltimore pound. Poor guy weighed 32 pounds, skin and bones but now he is a healthy 50 lb’er. Alot of really caring folks at the Anne Arundel pound, Baltimore not so much. My dogs bring a comfort to my life and takes my mind away from the craziness going on in this country nowadays.

Yup, for those that take care of the disposable kids, and/or the disposable animals.

Here in S.E. Michigan, the Oakland County shelter offers senior cats to seniors (of which I am one) and will pay all the subsequent vet fees till the animal passes away.

Unfortunately, the program is only available to Oakland County residents.......That's unfortunate because I live in Macomb County and would consider adopting one.

That’s a nice thing to do. It’s great when our older furry friends can have a chance to live out their days in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

I’ve always felt that our ancestors love us through our pets. Each hug is from someone in your family reaching out to you from Heaven.

That’s an interesting thought. A pet’s love is real, they don’t know how to fake caring.

Good for you stepping up to the plate to take in these precious babes. I LOVE my older dog; he’s a 14.5 year old pit bull boxer. He has shown me how easy and lovable the older ones are so I will definitely do another when he’s gone.

I also have a 16 month old pit and he is lots of fun but lots of energy!

Me too! I’m always wondering who’s soul is in my pet. I think they are angels

Another plus for getting an older pooch - they won’t run you ragged!

I am a dog lover and have never except for very short periods in my life (military) been without a companion.

this from the piece, “A dog will love you no matter what — no matter what the age.” How true and their love is indeed unconditional which is a great part of what makes them so wonderful.

There are a few here on FR who believe animals, including our household pets are nothing more than dumb creatures meant to be used and abused with impunity by us an allegedly higher form of life. In fact no animal, whether in the wild or domesticated could come remotely close to exhibiting the cruel behavior on it’s own kind as humans routinely do.

My wife and I have done quite a few animal rescues over the last 25 years.Horses, dogs and cats-they all found a home here on the farm.A pony we rescued was about a day away from dying and she had 9 years here after we got her medical issues fixed.I believe every one of these animals helped make me a better person and I know every one of them expressed their gratitude to us for helping them.
