Let’s face it, bubba was able to portray himself as the kind of guy most people would like to have a beer with.
Everything he did, no matter how awful, was framed with a “don’t take this the wrong way — I agree with you except...” then say the opposite of you. Or, mor often, just agree with you and then stab you in he back.
