GOP senators reject Trump's call to end the filibuster

President Donald Trump on Tuesday seemingly called for an end to the legislative filibuster in the Senate, frustrated that Republicans were unable to include his policy goals in a must-pass spending bill. He also suggested that a government shutdown in September might be “good” in order to accomplish more without interference from Democrats.

Senate Republicans responded by rejecting Trump swiftly and decisively.

"I'm not going to support a change in rules. The Founding Fathers set it up this way," said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), who's been in Washington about three weeks longer than Trump. "It's worked for centuries. It can still work. We don't have a rule problem, we've got a people problem."

"He and I differ on that because without the filibuster this country would've been gone a long time ago," said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), the most senior GOP senator. "I'm gonna talk to him about it. I'll get him back on line."

"I don't think the American people elected president Trump and Republican majorities in both houses to shut down the government. I think they expected us to govern. And that's what we're doing," said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas).

Trump suggested earlier this year that if Democrats blocked his Supreme Court nominee then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should gut the filibuster to approve his high court pick. That's exactly what happened.

McConnell, however, has vowed he would not similarly undo the 60-vote threshold for legislation. Sixty-one senators sent him a letter last month supporting its continuance.

From Wikipedia:

The concept of the filibuster emerged in the Senate in the 1850s.

"I'm not going to support a change in rules. The Founding Fathers set it up this way," said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), who's been in Washington about three weeks longer than Trump. "It's worked for centuries. It can still work. We don't have a rule problem, we've got a people problem."

This man is a U.S. Senator? What an embarassment. We don't need our own Hank Johnson.

I am just trying to figure this out. It feels like there is a lot more to this than we can see. You may be right about Trump “living to fight another day” but what I’ve seen from him tells me that he (and all of us) will come out winners when all is said and done. It always seems to end that way for President Trump and hopefully for America. He is a winner and that makes us winners. I’ll take one day of Democrat gloating about this CR over the travesty that was the Obama administration. This might just be a necessary evil to achieve a greater good. We all knew this was not going to be easy and I too am shocked at how quickly people want to throw in the towel even while we are winning. I guess it might be some PTSD (Pre-Trump Stress Disorder). Eight years of Obama made us this way.

Trump is toast.

It took eight years to create this monster. It will take more than 100 days to bring it down. Have faith. This is not the end, it is just a bump in the road. Remember the election? The media, the Dems, the pollsters had us convinced we were losing when we were actually winning. I think history is repeating itself.

See post 29.

Check out the funding sources to PP and see for yourself that removing government funding will not change anything with abortion numbers.

Forcing liberals to spend half a billion dollars to fund PP is far better than making taxpayers do it.

The rate and number of abortions have declined for years. Pro-lifers are winning. Trump's election guaranteed the freedom for pro-lifers to continue to reduce the the abortion rate.

THEY ARE LYING BASTARDS, The Filibuster DID NOT EXIST as a result of the Founding Fathers.

First, historical lore says that the filibuster was part of the original design of the Senate. Not true. When we scour early Senate history, we discover that the filibuster was created by mistake.

I don’t want taxpayer money going to PP. But I’m not under the illusion that cutting off taxpayer money to PP will eliminate abortion like some seem to think.

I’d veto it. What’s he got to lose?

In fact, he can say he’s going to use the shutdown to identify the non-essential elements of government and target that as savings.

There is just no way, no way, to defend the idea that with all three branches, liberal priorities still take priority.

I’d get those to idiots (Ryan and Gobbler) into the Oval and I’d ream them and say this dies in Congress, or I veto it. You lay that stinking coil on my desk and I’ll use it to reduce government in a way that you will not like. Your families will lose business, your friends will lose business, and I will create the monster reporters of tomorrow when I leak what they need to know to roll you both up.

The filibuster sham gives the Republicans an excuse to appear to vote for rational measures that they and the other Democrats don’t want, an excuse to appear to support a Trump measure while ensuring it is killed.

By 2018 trump will either have done what we need for him to do or the party is over and we are all put out with the trash.

Even when our guy wins over the Vicarious Democrat and goes triumphantly goes to take his seat in DC; after no more than 30 minutes in office he is not our guy any more.

Cantorization is no longer relevant and never really was. The new guy becomes the same as the ousted guy on his first day.

Leaving Trump is simply not an option. Trump is far and away the individual most equipped to turn the country around and reclaim the Republic. If he declines to do what he can do there is no one else and there is no other recourse possible short of civil war and we will not win in a civil war, even if our side prevails.

Nothing is going to eliminate all abortions.

The abortion rate has dropped dramatically for 25 years. Why aren't you happy about the progress being made?

The Republican Congress is making sure that 2018 is going to be a blood bath, for themselves. They are giving the base no reason whatsoever to support of vote for their two-timing rear ends.

As if they care! Their overlords will take good care of them. They'll find good positions elsewhere. Meanwhile, some other inner-party operative will take their place.

Why do you assume I’m not happy about a drop in abortion rates??

Weird.
