As I said, the choice is that stark and that Manichaean. If he will not risk his presidency on this issue he will lose it.

Nahhh. This is a non-issue to most Americans. Trump himself will declare how he is continuing to get things done as he has averted a governmental shutdown.
Non-issue. By tomorrow the focus of the MSM and all of America will be on some other item making the news.
“Real danger to the country”? Please. Remember that the real danger to the country was Hillary. And even if Trump lost the battle on TrumpCare and even though he has correctly forecasted that he would lose the veto battle if he challenged this stopgap funding bill - the country (and Trump’s performance so far) is in no danger.
You do not know whether he would in fact lose a veto fight but we both know it is his duty to try. If he were to lose a veto fight and two thirds of the Senate overrode his veto, it would occur only because a coalition formed of Democrats and rinos.
This coalition, joined by Trump, is a danger to the Republic and it is something I have predicted for some months. My assumption is that Trump is already governing with that coalition to avoid any fight over the veto. My contention is that if he puts up a fight, if he goes to the people, if he lets the government shutdown, he actually has a good chance of winning, he only needs a third of the Senate, and in any event he will have spared his presidency being discredited, even humiliated.
Obviously I disagree with you about the seriousness of this betrayal of virtually every campaign promise he made.
