French amphibious carrier visits Japan ahead of Pacific show of power
By Nobuhiro Kubo | SASEBO
As tension spikes on the Korean peninsula, a French amphibious assault carrier sailed into Japan's naval base of Sasebo on Saturday ahead of drills that risk upsetting China, which faces U.S. pressure to rein in North Korea's arms programs.
The Mistral will lead exercises next month near Guam, along with forces from Japan, the United States and Britain, practicing amphibious landings around Tinian, an island about 2,500 km (1,553 miles) south of the Japanese capital of Tokyo.
The drills, involving 700 troops, were planned before Saturday's test-firing of a ballistic missile by North Korea, in defiance of world pressure, in what would be its fourth successive unsuccessful missile test since March.

P!
Looks more white than gray.
Any American who thinks that the French military is a useful adjuvant to American security and can be trusted in a fight, is a fool.
Of course it’s amphibious. What other kind of ship would the Frogs build?
Looks as if the Frenchies ran out of money before construction was completed...
Interesting ship. The French built a couple for sale to Russia. However, the sale was suspended/cancelled due to the Ukraine situation. So two were sold to Egypt.
.........well, can’t help but comment on this one. “Sasebo”, where I lived 2 years of my life is ONLY home to a tiny Japanese Naval presence. 90% of the Naval Facility is U.S. Navy. I get so tired of the libs around the world denigrating the US while boosting other nations. It’s like sport!
That said, the 2 years I spent there were great fun for a 21 year old kid.
Coalition of the Willing.
The more craft that take part in the first strike, the better.
Even if they’re French.
Amphibious? How do you drive that on the road?
When well led, French troops will fight. They did the best that could be done when they defended Hitler in the bunker from the advancing Russians.
And the initial resistance to the Americans in North Africa was strong, but, as with Berlin, the French were overwhelmed by a superior force.
Then there is Dakar, where they handily beat the British.
A good bit smaller than the American equivalent.
