AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas Republicans were poised Wednesday to take a big step toward banning "sanctuary cities" in their state, debating a bill through which police chiefs and sheriffs could even be jailed for not cooperating fully with federal immigration authorities.
Although Democrats don't have the votes in the Republican-controlled Legislature to stop the bill from going to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who made such a ban a priority, they vowed to fight it at every step, promising hours of emotionally charged debate on Wednesday before the Texas House votes.
Under the bill, the state could withhold funding from local governments for acting as sanctuary cities, even as the Trump administration's efforts to do so nationally have hit roadblocks. Other Republican-controlled states have pushed for similar polices in recent years, just as more liberal ones have done the opposite. But Texas would be the first in which police chiefs and sheriffs could be jailed for not helping enforce immigration law. They could also lose their jobs.
The bill is needed to "keep the public safe and remove bad people from the street," said Rep. Charlie Geren of Fort Worth.
"The bill does not target or discriminate against illegal immigrants. This bill specifically targets criminals who happen to be here illegally," Geren said.

The rats will just get some “judge” from the ninth circus to throw the law out.
Good, exactly what is needed.
No elected official should be protecting illegal aliens from our laws, including President Trump.
The illegal DACA program must end.
“The bill does not target or discriminate against illegal immigrants. This bill specifically targets criminals who happen to be here illegally,” Geren said.

Well, that’s unfortunate.
Illegal aliens SHOULD be targeted and discriminated against, they are ILLEGAL ALIENS!
Only removing those caught and convicted of other crimes leaves millions upon millions of illegal aliens here with the opportunity to harm of kill Americans.
We should not have to wait until they victimize Americans before they are removed.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Lupe Valdez in the pokey.
I’m thinking Greg Abbott needs to be next president.
With all due respect to those coming here illegally because of how bad it is home, we need to stop all forms of support from the welfare state to any parent who does not have legal status here.
I think about 92% are on our welfare state through at least there children. Stop that and many will go home IMO.
Texas just might tell the 9th Circus to go to hell and poke your nose in our business and you might lose that nose.
. The injunction will be based on pre-arrest anxiety
Curious,
Why does Texas need this law? Aren’t sanctuary cities already illegal by definition?
I wonder if anyone actually believes the Rats give a damn about the “poor” illegals? If it was discovered the Hispanic vote went 60-40 for the republicans there would not be one “Sanctuary” city, not one.
Not if the Democrats don't like it. They don't have to follow the law.
Citizens of other countries do not have a right to simply move here.
We need vigorous enforcement on employment and benefits to encourage as many as possible to leave on their own and vigorous enforcement to remove those that don’t.
ALL of them.
From WHEREVER they are from.
Texas comes under the 5th Circuit.
Im thinking Greg Abbott needs to be next president.

“Im thinking Greg Abbott needs to be next president.”
Great minds think alike.
“The rats will just get some judge from the ninth circus to throw the law out.”
They won’t let the fact that Texas isn’t in the 9th circuit stop them!
I was thinking yesterday, Trump/Sessions ought to just ignore the ruling of the 9th circuit.
