Some guy on either YouTube or one of the singing shows changed the lyric to, “Don’t have much money but, girl if I did”

Now, I never took the original as a gay line. I think it’s more like you might say, “Boy, it’s hot out here!” But, the guy changed the lyric and caught all kinds of hell for being “homophobic.”
