Trump and his aides take hard line on border wall, as threat of government shutdown looms
Washington Post ^ | Apr. 23, 2017 | Sean Sullivan

President Trump and his top aides applied new pressure Sunday on lawmakers to include money for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border in a must-pass government funding bill, raising the possibility of a federal government shutdown this week.

In a pair of tweets, Trump attacked Democrats for opposing the wall and insisted that Mexico would pay for it “at a later date,” despite his repeated campaign promises not including that qualifier. And top administration officials appeared on Sunday shows to press for money for the wall, including White House budget director Mick Mulvaney, who said Trump might refuse to sign a spending bill that does not include money for the wall.

Trump needs to VETO legislation that tries to do an end run on funding for the wall and avoid the shutdown.

I hope Congress realizes this.

As far as I am concerned, the government SHOULD BE shutdown if there is no funding for the wall.

All the more reason that they should not be paid!

Kowtowing to union thugs is unconstitutional tomfoolery.

Looks like a perfect time to decertify the unions...by executive order...just as they were created.

Stand by for exploding RAT heads.

I have NO PROBLEM with legal immigration.

I do. The whole system has been abused since 1965 and needs to be shut down for a few decades - at least. A country purposely de industrializing does not need any immigrants at all.

The Republicans control both houses in congress. For this to happen with a Republican in the White House validates why many Freepers are furious with the GOPe.

The only reason why they had so many victories this past election is to help President Trump and because the DNC has gone completely insane. They are no longer a serious political party in my estimate. The are criminal enterprise against the Republic.

They won’t get paid if the law and regs and changed and Trump can get that done.

Can the President send the military to the border immediately? Surely the situation with human trafficking and drug cartels would justify acting on the border issue right now? I support building the wall, but there are places that it may not be feasible; moreover, it will take time for construction. Secure it now!

He’s offered the Dems Obamacare subsidies for border wall funding. They should take the trade while they can.

I’m reading here and there that the US took in about 3.3 trillion in all revenue in 2016.

They spent about 3.8 trillion.

The deficit was a half trillion, 500 billion, so that was about what was borrowed.

That’s less than 15% last year of expenditures

Cut 500 billion in spending and why does there need to be a debt increase?

Someone explain why the government must shut down if you decide not to spend as much?

Trump Wins YUGE in a Government Shutdown
American Spectator ^ | April 24, 2017, 12:04 am | LARRY SCHWEIKART

We’re looking at a possible government shutdown next Saturday, and that’s got some conservatives nervous. They shouldn’t be. Admittedly, past government shutdowns — or threats of shutdowns — have worked against conservatives. With Trump, however, it would likely be a different story....

Even a partial shutdown plays precisely into the Trump agenda and his campaign promises of draining the swamp. Trump’s base, as well as “swing voters” who are fed up with out of control spending, would, of course, be cheered by such a move. Moreover, such a shutdown plays into Trump’s hands by giving him every excuse to slash funding to “sanctuary cities,” to bloated university programs, to global warming science grants, and on and on. Social Security checks will continue, the military will be funded, and necessary services will hum along while grants to study the sex life of the fruit bat will not. Deep State bureaucrats who so depend on the federal government for their very existence would be the ones most hurt. In short, Trump can not only make even a partial shutdown look like the Democrats’ fault but shield many of the (normally) loudest voices from the pain.

More important, every minute the bloated government is shut down reinforces the perception of Trump as a businessman who cuts the fat, extracts more efficiency, and makes the U.S. government more like a business. Unlike the Clinton/Gingrich shutdown battle, the control over what sectors of the government get their money is in the hands of a Republican president, not a Democrat who held up funds on the most visible and sympathetic programs. Trump would relish starving all the non-essential offices like PBS and NPR or global-warming science grants.
