Sally Bedell Smith, dogged biographer and author of Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, out this week from Penguin Random House, has collected an exhaustive file of facts about the future king of England. Unlike his mother, Charles is not what you might call a beloved figure. And while Bedell Smith doesn't spare the touchy-feely, parapsychology loving, Dumbo-eared Charles, her portrait is also rich with sympathy, even affection.
Bullied as a youth by his overbearing father (Philip was the original alpha male, Smith says), Charles spent his whole life seeking approval. Cowed by a sense of duty and fearful of even minor mistakes, the well-intentioned, protocol-loving Charles married Diana because his father said he should. No matter that he may have been in love with Camilla Parker Bowlesshe didn't pass muster.

“Charles married Diana because his father said he should. No matter that he may have been in love with Camilla Parker Bowles”
didn’t camilla marry someone else before Charles married Diana? Camilla couldn’t have cared too much fro charles if she married some one else. Or they are both spineless idiots letting others tell them what to do.
Thanks for that just another reminder of how lost England is. It’s over.
+1
He would kiss his horse and pat Diana on the head
“Princess Anne likes horses too”
I guess her and Camilla get along fine then.
Jackass or worse. The imagination runs wild. I need a drink.
Perhaps the President of the USA could sign an Executive Order.
I remember the joke was that they were going to name their kid “Up” so then they’d sign letters “Up, Chuck and Di.”
The monarchy is such archaic nonsense. We Americans spilled much blood to shed their chains from us. GB is a country being colonized by former colonies. I pity them as their government is committing suicide and the Kingdom is worthless.
What we have here is not a failure to communicate, but a letter of intent...

Sally Bedell Smith’s book is, like her other work about the Royal family, a piece of crap full of falsehoods and misinformation, gossip and lies presented for the titillation of people.
It is disturbing to see people taking it seriously. It is very disturbing to me, personally, as a friend of the Prince, to see it being taken seriously by people here at Freerepublic.
His Royal Highness is, on most issues, a conservative who would fit it quite well here, if he had the option of participation (environmentalism is the one great exception to that). He is nothing like the caricature of him presented in the press, who as I’m sure most people here are aware, is dominated by the left wing and who delight in trying to make conservatives look like fools. They’re trying to do it to President Trump right now and most of you can see that’s false. But for some reason, large number of you simply accept their tactics and approach are accurate when it comes to the Prince of Wales. They’re not. These articles, these books, are intended to make him look like a fool so nobody will listen when he speaks out on issues from a conservative perspective. They give publicity to his environmentalism because it’s the only thing he does that they see as praiseworthy. They suppress or even deliberately and manipulate and selectively quote from his other speeches to make it look like he said things he didn’t. And people just swallow it.
It’s disturbing. Very disturbing.
Rumors were that it was Phillip that cleaned up the mess with Diana.
He saw his duty as protecting the Queen and the throne, and did whatever was necessary to that end.
Charles will be King because he does not want William to have to deal with the crazy press until he is a little older and has had some life without the stupid duties of King added on to his already annoying life.
William will get there soon enough, and George will already be the one people are ask for. Expect Charles for 15 years then William for 30 then George for 40 years.
Charles III will be king, and may even surprise a few people but his reign will not be long—six years or so. Then it will be William on the throne.
I had dinner once with a Major in the Royal Marines (I believe it was) and he and his wife were frequent guests of Prince Charles and Diana. He also said that the public image and impression was totally false and he was a solid friend.
Shame he couldn’t be the same for his wife.
...Whatever.
King Charles will be the cause of the Brits ending the monarchy. Chuck is a first class twit
Charles is a daft imbecile. Great Britain would be much better served if he were skipped over in favor of William.
