Every year.

It's the stupid emissions test and check engine light that can be expensive.

The mechanic told my husband to keep the gas "topped off" to keep air out of the gas line.

What a pain.

We had a Suburban for years that used to get that “check engine” light every other time the vehicle was started. The mechanics never could figure out what was going on. Fortunately we didn’t have to pass any tests.

We most always just ignore the Check Engine Light. We tell the garage when we have our oil change or something else. It goes away then returns after a few days.
