Another journalist has been killed in Mexico — the fourth in just six weeks.

Authorities said reporter Maximino Rodriguez Palacios was shot dead outside of a shopping center Friday in La Paz, a coastal city in the state of Baja California Sur.

Rodriguez, 72, wrote about politics and crime for a news organization called the Pericu Collective. He had previously worked as a spokesman for the state attorney general’s office.

Friday’s shooting is the latest in a string of violent attacks on journalists in Mexico that has claimed four lives since March 2 and has left several others wounded. The attacks have drawn condemnation from human rights advocates, with the Committee to Protect Journalists calling the situation in Mexico a “crisis” of freedom of expression.

I visited Mexico a few times in the late 1960s and found it to be a crime ridden third world hell-hole. I haven’t been back since and advise everyone in my family to stay out of that country, although the younger ones in their 20s don’t believe me and still go down there. Idiots.

I’ve thought for the longest time the only upgrade that could come to US from Mexico would be in the field of journalism.

This is pretty sick. Journalists who despise closed border folk, like me, are murdered by the people they promote, and I’m supposed to care? Journalist hate me, but I’ve never killed one and never will. Maybe they should choose their friends more carefully.

What in the world are you people on this thread talking about? This is a Mexican journalist in Mexico. These journalists get shot because they are working to expose the corruption down there, oftentimes how the cartels have bought half the government. This is what actual journalism is about. Geez. Just because our journalists are a bunch of queers and communists, no need to disparage the ones in the rest of the world risking their lives to do their jobs.

I agree! I don’t understand the flippant attitude of some—These journalists who risk their lives to report the truth about their government should be celebrated and supported here.

And the down side to this story is?

Seriously? You don’t see a DOWNSIDE???
*note proper usage

The downside is that a real journalist seeking to expose corruption in Mexico died for reporting the truth. And sadly, this is the FOURTH to die recently.

Yet you say there is no downside...Sheesh!

“Yet you say there is no downside...Sheesh!”

I guess humor is not one of your strong points.

Well forgive me if I lack humor when 4 journalists were killed in Mexico for investigative reporting...maybe not best time or place for it? But could just be me.

Glad to know you were trying to be humorous. However, there are people who probably would not care because it concerns a journalist and it is in Mexico—neither is terribly popular here. Some people have said some fairly insensitive stuff—they wish or they would not mind if various locations (New York, Chicago, California fell off the face of the earth, people left, etc,—again, glad you are not one of them.

a /sarc or jk would have made it clear—yeah, some of us need those to know for sure.

Freegards.
