Pulitzer prize-winning columnist Peggy Noonan writes in the Wall Street Journal about the efforts to take out White House strategist Steve Bannon. While offering a candid assessment of Bannons shortcomings and strengths, Noonan summarizes Bannons populist and nationalist worldview as outlined in a speech he gave at the Vatican in 2014 a speech that predicted the issues that propelled Trump to victory in 2016.
From Noonans column:
But theres something low, unseemly and ugly in the efforts to take [Bannon] out so publicly and humiliatingly, to turn him into a human oil spot on the tarmacthis not only from his putative colleagues but now even the president. I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late, Mr. Trump purred to the New York Posts Michael Goodwin.
What will take its place if [Bannon] leaves the White House or recedes as a figure? What worldview will prevail, to the extent Mr. Trump does worldviews? Policy changes accompanying Mr. Bannons diminishment this week included the presidents speaking approvingly of the Export-Import Bank and NATO, declaring that China isnt a currency manipulator after all, suggesting the dollar may be too strong, and hitting Syria and Afghanistan.
None of that sounds like Candidate Trump.

Establishment Rising in Trumps White House: Noonan Says Efforts to Take Out Bannon Low, Unseemly, Ugly
I don’t like these developments. We need Bannon every bit as much as we need Sessions. We don’t need Cohn, the Prince, and the other 5th column libs.
Peggy Noonan is an anti-Trumper.
I would take all this with a large grain of salt.
FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody. Knows. Anything.
Except LS, and most of you won’t listen to him.
I hope the president isn’t getting absorbed by THE SWAMP but it sure has that feel.
I don’t think that Ivanka and Jared are the kinds of influential aides he needs right now.
I hope it’s fake. With how fast it has developed we will know in the next couple of weeks.
New boss same as old boss. No real change in anything. A few fluff pieces on manufacturers. Most are still going to Mexico.
Just had to weather the transition. The Trump train might be full of crap...... Hope not. Actions speak louder than words...... Am watching, with low expectations at this point and time.
The article is not in favor of Cohn and Kushner. Coming from Noonan it is an objective look arpt what might be happening. I think Noonan is as much against a Wall Street resurgence as most on FR.
I dunno. Trump said NATO was obsolete because nobody was paying or caring about the cost of NATO functions except the US and a sparse handful of others. Now countries are committing to pay their 2% and to increase their own cooperation with NATO functions, things look a little rosier. If the bloom wears off, and countries start acting like spoiled dependents again, then NATO will go back to being obsolete.
This is pure garbage, designed to demoralize Trump supporters and get them angry at Trump. Classic divide-and-conquer crap. Also consider the writer is already discredited. Noonan is a Never-Trumper. If Bannon is bad for Trump, shouldn’t she be applauding instead of concern-trolling? She praised Obama, for crying out loud.
What you have said is as uninformed as any commentary I’ve ever seen.
Do you understand the magnitude of what Trump is doing with the military?
I may drop out, grow my hair and smoke dope. I want a mini van with a custom 60's paint job.
If his only accomplishment were his military policy and nothing else had any impact, President Trump would still emerge as one of the greatest of presidents.
But if you combine his drastic improvement in military policy with everything else Trump is doing, you see the effect is sure to be exponential.
It does feel wrong that the knives are out for Bannon. But if Bannon is giving speeches to the Pope, maybe his loyalty is with Rome and Trump knows something we don’t.
Actually, I hope he sees my comment and realizes how tenuous his credibility is with the base. Steve Bannon and Breitbart think the way a lot of us do.
