[...] The origin of the rumor appears to stem from a bit of sloppy Googling by users of a crowd-sourced site called Everipedia, which published erroneous information that then spread across social media and was taken as fact. The site describes itself as the encyclopedia of everything, and it functions similarly to Wikipedia, where users contribute the content.
As Daos name first began to circulate publicly, users of Everipedia created a page for Dao that identified him as David Thanh Duc Dao, an American physician based in New Orleans, Louisiana. To support this identification, users cited links to generic Internet sites that listed the full name of a David Dao who was a doctor in Louisiana the wrong David Dao.
(Everipedia users would later correct Daos page and then identify him with a new name, David Anh Duy Dao, a Vietnamese American physician based in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. This time, the source was court records related to Daos indictment in Kentucky, which listed the correct Daos full name.)
But it was too late. Social-media users began identifying the United passenger as David Thanh Duc Dao, of Louisiana, which later led other users to point out that this was not the same name listed on Daos criminal records in Kentucky.
They have misidentified him as Dr. David Anh Duy Dao, wrote a user on Imgur, an image-sharing site, in a post that got more than 34,000 views, which featured a photo of Daos bloodied face. (The post was later deleted.) Dr. David Thanh Duc Dao is his actual name and with the false reports attempting to demonize and justify the treatment of him, it should be known that this man is innocent of the allegations. [...]

Maybe I’m an idiot, but I read this drivel and I STILL can’t really figure out if they are telling me that the United passenger truly has a sordid past or if some OTHER guy has a sordid past. The narrative in the posted piece whip-saws back and forth so much I can’t tell.
But it doesn’t matter. We should not live in a society where someone has a business dispute with a major corporation and the first instinct people have is “Did he ever do anything wrong? Like 15 or 20 years ago?? Can we smear him? Can we? Huh? Huh? Can we smear him?”
Character assassination is a sport now.
It was a newspaper that investigated & reported this info.
That's modern "news" for you. I'm pretty sure what the LAT is saying is that meds-for-sex-doc = United doc ... but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
But it doesnt matter. We should not live in a society where someone has a business dispute with a major corporation and the first instinct people have is Did he ever do anything wrong? Like 15 or 20 years ago?? Can we smear him? Can we? Huh? Huh? Can we smear him?
Agree 1000%.
I agree. My reading is the David Dao on that flight is, in fact, the same doctor with a sordid past, as described in the article.
The only thing wrong with his character is that he chose note to leave peacefully, when he was otherwise legally obligated....
Well, of course. Newspapers don’t really specialize in reporting what happened. They are only interested in persuading you how you should think about things. In this case, the newspaper was very interested in persuading everyone that the passenger is the business dispute with United “had it coming” because he had been a scumbag in the past.
That’s what they teach in J-school. Simply focusing on what happened would be ... boring.
“he chose note to leave peacefully, when he was otherwise legally obligated....”
No, he wasn’t:

So the guy in the video is DADD. He is a currently a practicing doctor and guilty of selling drugs for sex? He has 6 felony convictions in 2004?
While DTDD is another doctor, not guilty.
So now I don’t really care about the plane incident so much as I am wondering who in the world allowed him to maintain his medical practice? Has he committed more crimes of the same?
While prior acts cannot be used IN A COURTROOM they certainly can in public. Is he the gay sex doctor who lost his license for trading gay sex for drugs, or not?
You are more than welcome to form an opinion about him from his actions in the past. You just can’t use them to convict someone for an UNRELATED crime.
He certainly seems like a weirdo - screaming like that and running onto a plane after being removed... He’s lucky he wasn’t shot
HE SHOULD BE IN JAIL
Yes. I read that and it is drivel.
As far as I can tell this David Dao is the poker player and felon.
This article sort of said that.
The guy who threw the tantrum and was dragged off the plane is the guy who was convicted on drug charges and related as far as I can tell.
He should have been deported over a decade ago.
“So now I dont really care about the plane incident so much as I am wondering who in the world allowed him to maintain his medical practice? Has”
And why wasn’t he deported?
Thanks for that food for thought. I am still not 100% convinced, but that said, I heard that he was traveling with family? IF that is true, in my mind, it changes things for sure.
Deported to where? He’s a naturalized American citizen.
To Vietnam, where he emigrated from.
Naturalized citizens or permanent resident aliens can be deported if they commit felonies. A naturalized citizen can lose their citizenship.
I read elsewhere that he was not permitted to practice medicine for ten years. Starting in 2015 he has been permitted to practice medicine but only one day a week and only at an outpatient clinic.
Interesting.
