China’s nuclear get-out clause over defence of North Korea

China’s nuclear get-out clause over defence of North Korea

Beijing not obliged to defend Pyongyang as its development of nuclear weapons breaches mutual defence pact, experts say as US warns it may launch strike against North

China is not obliged to help defend North Korea from military attack if the reclusive state developed nuclear weapons, according to Chinese diplomatic and military observers.

The assessment comes as senior officials in Washington warn of a strike against the Pyongyang regime.

China and North Korea signed a mutual aid and cooperation treaty in 1961 as they sought to mount a united front against Western powers. It specifies that if one of the parties comes under armed attack, the other should render immediate assistance, including military support.

But the treaty also says both nations should safeguard peace and security. For China, North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons in violation of the United Nations treaty on non-proliferation could amount to a breach of their pact, leaving Beijing with no obligation to lend a hand, observers said.

China could also have a get-out clause if any US military intervention was not deemed an armed attack. “It’s hard to say how China would assist North Korea militarily in case of war, since North Korea is developing nuclear weapons, an act that might have already breached the treaty between the two nations,” said Li Jie, a retired Chinese naval colonel.

From time to time, some of so-called Chinese experts voiced their doubts about protecting N. Korea, raising hope that China may change its N. Korea policy. Nevertheless, after a while, Chinese government eventually took N. Korea's side, and the status quo continued. Is it going to be different this time? It seems that it is solely up to Trump. If his responses are perceived as lukewarm, there will be no change.

A regime change in North Korea is obviously what is needed. If we had the military capability when Hitler was terrorizing the world, we would have thumped Adolf out of existence so fast your head would swim. I think President Trump got the go ahead from Chinese President Xi Jinping to take out the psychologically deranged Kim Jong-un. What are the chances of another psychopath stepping into Kim’s place to lead North Korea down the nuclear path of terror? The chaos left after a surgical strike on Kim Jong-un would be minuscule compared to a nuclear strike on Japan or, may God help us, Los Angeles. It might even be a national day of joy for North Korea.

“It might even be a national day of joy for North Korea.”

Who would know in NOKO? The country would be very radioactive and few if any survivors. Even China would nuke them.

I disagree with trumps reversal on china trade and currency in order to get help with nk. China wouldn’t let him launch nukes. For all we know..china sent word to Nk to pull this stunt to give them leverage with trump so he would cave on trade and the currency situation...but

Oh well. China wins

"I think President Trump got the go ahead from Chinese President Xi Jinping to take out the psychologically deranged Kim Jong-un."

Of course he did.

The foreign policy moves Trump has made since January are unprecedented. Tillerson went to China and laid the foundation for the Mar-a-Lago summit. Jinping comes to Florida and Trump makes a grand deal with him. Suddenly China is refusing Nork coal shipments (while buying US coke, a twofer) sending 200,000 troops to the border, and talking about abrogating their defense treaty.

China's moves were made easier by the assassination of Kim's brother who was under Chinese protection and was probably slated to replace Kim in a case like this. No matter, Trump probably told them that he just wants Kim removed. After that China can install another puppet.

Trump is brilliant.

So propagandized, it'd more likely be a national day of "cry-ins".

Would nuking LA result in an electoral college shift?

Interesting...thanks for the ping.

Looks like China's already putting pressure on Kim, but still it's questionable if “this” Kim is going to stay obedient to China's authority.

I know several Koreans who long for the reunification of North and South Korea. East and West Berlin had such a reunification and it was a joyous occasion.

Tear down that wall!
