North Korea is very useful to China and has been for a long time. A united Korea would eventually be a serious competitor to China - so they support the North to keep unification at bay. An added benefit of keeping the North/South hostilities going is it keeps lots of our troops tied up on the DMZ. They've been there for over 60 years now so very expensive. China also uses N.Korea to play bad cop/not quite so bad cop with Japan. And finally, N.Korea is good for raising a ruckus and taking all the eyes off China when China does something outrageous.

China has been very happy keeping the Kim family in power in N.Korea - but that is on the verge of changing. N.Korea's nukes have finally started reliably going bang and their ballistic missiles are doing much better not exploding on the launch pad and working nukes and missiles together means that N.Korea will soon have, if not MAD capability, the ability to nuke Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing - which would loosen the leash China's had on N.Korea (and Beijing don't like that one bit.) So China would be VERY happy to get us to take out the fat boy and his family. And the funny thing is, they are making progress there AND getting us to pay for it what with President Trump saying that he will accept a less advantageous trade deal with China if China will "help" us with North Korea - which means we do the heavy work and pay China to stay out of the way.
