I Thought I Understood the American Right. Trump Proved Me Wrong
NY Times ^ | Rick Perlstein

A historian of conservatism looks back at how he and his peers failed to anticipate the rise of the president.

---

Until Nov. 8, 2016, historians of American politics shared a rough consensus about the rise of modern American conservatism. It told a respectable tale. By the end of World War II, the story goes, conservatives had become a scattered and obscure remnant, vanquished by the New Deal and the apparent reality that, as the critic Lionel Trilling wrote in 1950, liberalism was “not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition.”

Year Zero was 1955, when William F. Buckley Jr. started National Review, the small-circulation magazine whose aim, Buckley explained, was to “articulate a position on world affairs which a conservative candidate can adhere to without fear of intellectual embarrassment or political surrealism.”

Buckley excommunicated the John Birch Society, anti-Semites and supporters of the hyperindividualist Ayn Rand, and his cohort fused the diverse schools of conservative thinking — traditionalist philosophers, militant anti-Communists, libertarian economists — into a coherent ideology, one that eventual

It’s an interesting read - all the more remarkable considering that he obviously wrote it without ever speaking to a Trump supporter or a real conservative.

Trump proved him wrong, but Perlstein still didn’t learn his lesson, because his article demonstrates he still doesn’t understand the American right. And he never will.

And still she persisted

Idiot. After JFK’s death there was no way LBJ wouldn’t be elected, it was a “memorial” vote.

For those of you not around for the assassination, it, today, seems incredible how quickly JFK was raised to sainthood in this country. He replaced Franklin on the half dollar and reluctance to spend this memorial currency led to the decline of the use of it in everyday transactions. They couldn’t wait to rename Cape Canaveral to Cape Kennedy, Idlewild Airport became JFK airport, dozen of schools, etc. etc.

A vote for LBJ was seen as a way to continue the “martyr’s” legacy. LBJ couldn’t lose.

people don’t just vote FOR one side, they also vote AGAINST the other.

At least 20% of Trump's votes were votes against Hillary. And 20% of Hillary's votes were against Trump. All elections are about the lesser of two evils. This one was an extreme example of that.

Hillary was the personification of everything that people find wrong with the direction the US is going. Even the 20% who voted for Hillary as the lesser of two evils saw her as the personification of everything wrong with the US

The 20% who chose Trump as the lesser of two evils basically had the position that they didn't have a clue what Trump would do if elected. They did not know what campaign promises he would keep and what he did not take seriously. But they did know what Hillary would do and did not like it

Trump didn’t run as a conservative. He ran as a populist.

The sad truth of the matter (as I keep screaming to my NeverTrump relatives) is that there are frankly too few of us for a Conservative to win at present.

...liberalism was “not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition.”

Intellectual = one who can not do anything of value, who demands to be paid for telling others what to do and how to do it.

wardaddy: I think the problem is largely what I identify in the current feature at my Truth Based Logic Conservative Resource Center: What Drives The Trump Haters, which connects the whole PC nonsense to the world government seekers' efforts to redirect American education & media in the middle of the last century. (I have been fighting that effort for 65 years.)

Buckley, in my estimation, severely compromised his outlook on some issues, to remain the "respectable conservative" in the New York social sets. (it is also possible that he was blackmailed in effect for having employed George Lincoln Rockwell, prior to Rockwell forming the American Nazi Party. That is just a supposition on my part; but having studied the Left in some of their own lairs, I am virtually certain that some of them would have tried to play that card in certain circles. And there were other similar possibilities.)

Yup. You summed it up much better than I did. Maybe the writer of the article hadn’t been born yet or was way too young to understand what was going on. Or, as I surmised, he’s just an idiot.

How does he defend Pete Seeger, Woodie Gutherie, and other American Communists protesting AGAINST going to war against Hitler?

Woodie’s guitar didn’t “kill fascists” until AFTER the Pearl Harbor attack.

Across the US, as in France, where Stalin's communists rioted and struck and protested FOR Hitler (against war with Germany, against resistance against Germany after France was conquered by Germany), Communists worldwide were FOR Hitler ... until the day he invaded Russia.

THEN, Communists worldwide fought to force the US, the UK, and France into ever-stronger attacks and invasions into Germany!

Pearl Harbor was months AFTER the German invasion of Russia.

One of the best, if not the best, historians of the conservative movement is the great Paul Gottfried.

That rarest of birds, the Jewish paleocon.

Not all that well known because neos did their best to see that he has been marginalized along with most other paleos. But well worth reading whenever possible.

Another reason Gottfried gets overlooked is that one of his main forums has been the dreaded White Deer site, forbidden to be linked to FR for reasons not all that clear.

“Hope his presidency doesn’t become George W. round 3 with pointless wars.”

It won’t.

Syria is about solving Europe’s Islam invasion. Trump has repeatedly spoken of his intention to create safe zones in Syria where refugees can be relocated. You can’t do that if Assad is busily killing civilians. I see the deal here being something along the lines of Russia picking a replacement and keeping a lid on the violence. My bet is Tillerson is working on this right now. But we won’t be the ones nation building the Syrian mess.

Our Nork pal Kim Jong-un should be the end of the Kim dynasty. Every administration since Clinton has been kicking the Nork can down the road leaving the problem for someone else. Trump has decided to be Someone Else and the threat of blackmail by a nuclear armed Nork lunatic is going to swiftly end before Kim is able to do more than make threats. Enlisting China was the important piece of that puzzle and that’s done.

I know why

Peter Brimelow gets a bad rap as an NRO evictee

But Jared Taylor is the real bogeyman to those obsessed with virtue signaling and it's patron saint Father Racism

I can see a case against AmRen but not the first eurobaby one

FR likes to stay relevant just in case

A lot of respected sites link the site in question

It's alt right no question

The real right in my view but hey it's no big really everyone doesn't see things real yet but the forum has definitely moved right

Ping to NYT alleged “historian’s” article including knee-slappers:

quote:

The alien narrative continues today in the work of National Review writers like Andrew McCarthy (“How Obama Embraces Islam’s Sharia Agenda”) and Lisa Schiffren (who argued that Obama’s parents could be secret Communists because “for a white woman to marry a black man in 1958, or ’60, there was almost inevitably a connection to explicit Communist politics”). And it found its most potent expression in Donald Trump’s stubborn insistence that Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

"Perlstein started with a thesis and then went rummaging about for random sentences that would support it." Jonah Goldberg

LOL - I don't agree with Jonah Goldberg often, but what he described as Perlstein's 'way' is typical of almost all liberal so-called 'journalists'... It's a perfect example of why people don't trust the New York Times.

Oh, and he also commandeers the KKK as a confusing element of conservatism!!! Yet the KKK was born and fostered among the Democrats!

The KKK was a democrat organization.

White Citizens Council was democrat.

George Wallace (who stood in the School House Door to stop black children from integrating Southern schools was democrat.

Bull Conner was Democrat.

Sen. Byrd - the only modern day member of the US Senate AND KKK member AND KKK organizer WAS A DEMOCRAT...

Hollings of South Carolina who put the confederate battle flag on the State Flag 'to give the finger' to the civil rights movement was a Democrat - democrat governor.

Oh and Martin Luther King Jr.? He was a Republican.

The only racist politician who 'switched' to being Republican was Lester Maddox.

Rick Perlstein's being dishonest... on so many levels.
