Is it not more efficacious to turn passengers back at the gate rather than wait for them to get settled in their seats before saying no go?

Imagine going to a fine restaurant for your anniversary dinner with your spouse. You just finished your salad, and your plate with a juicy prime rib is sitting in front of you. You're about to take your fork and knife to cut into it when the waiter swoops by and snatches the place off your table.

The waiter explains that the restaurant feeds its employees, and the dishwasher requested the prime rib tonight. This was the last piece... so you have to give it up so the dishwasher can have it. They'll gladly give you a free piece of meatloaf instead.

Nope.

The reason they overbook is many passengers simply do not show up.

Before I had a job that required me to fly private and I flew commercial.

Anytime they got over $600 I was off the plane and asking for coupons which were always granted, along with hotel and free meals.

I think they offered $1,000 on this flight. I would have jumped and asked for coupons, hotel, meal and a time certain for next flight...next day...
