United Airlines is Now Facing a Federal Investigation After That Video

Things aren’t looking very good for United Airlines at the moment. The airline is dealing with a public relations nightmare, their stock is tanking, and to top it all off, they are under review by the Department of Transportation.

The DOT announced last night that they’d be looking into United over how they treated the passenger who was physically ejected from their overbooked plane this weekend. Their statement says that the department will particularly examine rules regarding overbooked flights, as well as the procedures for dealing with fliers who refuse to give up their seats.

Fox News noted that the United incident has prompted calls for a congressional investigation and a review of policy. This comes after the Chicago’s Department of Aviation confirmed that one of the officers involved in the confrontation has been suspended from his job and will be investigated.

About double that time or more. Illinois is a long state north to south.

I’m not sympathizing for that guy....

But the cheapskate airline now has serious problems.
They:
* will lose many customers
* will get a lawsuit they cannot defend
* will, worst of all, have the FEDS up their arses.
* and of course, hundreds of parodies on youtube

I frequent this diner nearby for lunch and they know customer service. They would rather lose money many times than to lose a single customer. So if I order something and its more than 15 minutes late, they give me a piece of cake or some other desert free. Free bread, free kids stuff. Costs them a little, but they keep a single customer and they keep a single customer happy. Now that’s the way to be cheap! Don’t lose a single customer.

regardless, if they can treat him like this they can treat you, me or anyone else the same

That is exactly the point.

“”The flight wasn’t overbooked until United decided at the last minute that they needed those 4 seats to fly a crew in. Otherwise, they could have dealt with it at the gate.

I wonder if this was the last flight out of Chicago to Louisville, or only THEIR last flight. If other carriers still had flights, that would have been another safety valve.

Too bad the management didn’t think like you.

That is a very pleasant thought. It was despicable watching people jump to smear the passenger as though his past had anything to do with the incident in question.

It was to Louisville not St Louis. Straight down 65.

To be perfectly accurate 5 hrs 8 min at the speed limit.

It is my understanding that union rules prohibit United from driving employees.

According to USA Today, the flight was NOT overbooked.

United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said Tuesday that all 70 seats on United Express Flight 3411 were filled, but the plane was not overbooked as the airline previously reported. Instead, United and regional affiliate Republic Airlines, which operated the flight, selected four passengers to be removed to accommodate crew members needed in Louisville the next day. The passengers were selected based on a combination of criteria spelled out in United’s contract of carriage, including frequent-flier status, fare type, check-in time and connecting flight implications, among others, according to United.

United could have rented a limo for the employees traveling to Louisville.

Starting the CEO the United organization seems to have a jackboot mentality.

I guess it’s inevitable that there is at least one United PR flack with a FR account.

You REALLY have to wonder what the employees at Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines think about this debacle, let alone American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. I'm sure Southwest and Alaska managers are completely reviewing their overbooking policies with a fine tooth comb to make sure this debacle doesn't happen at their airline anytime soon.

“Maybe I’m missing something...”

Yes, I think you’re missing the fact that he had just been assaulted by three large men and suffered a head injury before that “snowflake behavior”.

People can tend to act a bit crazy after suffering a head injury, you know?

Three passengers made it off the flight without incident. Getting bumped happens all the time.

And to top it off, it wasn’t even a United flight! It was a Republic flight codeshare...something tells me that UAL will be rethinking their contract with Republic next time it comes up!

Getting bumped happens all the time.

No. Getting bumped does not happen all the time.

Accepting an offer to take a later flight happens all the time, but it is not “getting bumped.”

Getting bumped is being removed from a flight against your wishes. Thus getting bumped happens infrequently.
