Vladimir Putin has sensationally claimed that the US is preparing airstrikes on the Syrian capital - and will pin the blame on Bashar-al Assad's forces.

The Russian leader made the astonishing claim - that the US is planning to FAKE chemicals weapons attacks - during a joint press conference with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Putin insisted Russia would tolerate Western criticism of its role in Syria but hoped that attitudes would eventually soften.

But his claims that Russia has information strikes are being planned by the US on the southern Damascus region - the aim of which is to blame the resulting devastation on the subsequently discredited Syrian government - will not go down well in the White House.

I have never been one, but I’m not surprised that you’d think not agreeing with you makes one a leftist.

You could be absolutely right.

But why didn’t he hit enemy combatants, then? That way, he would get a double benefit.

Here are the possibilities as I see them in no particular order:

1. It didn’t actually happen.
2. Accident.
3. Assad did it to warn America and allies that he has this stuff and will use it.
4. The other side did it to make Assad look bad.
5. Crazy pilot theory.

Probably lots of others I don’t see.

I don’t specifically believe Putin, as all politicians lie. It is simply a matter of figuring out which lie, when.

The will of which enemy is he trying to break? ISIS? Qatar? Saudi Arabia? Saudi Arabia has made it clear by bombing of Yemen they are not terribly concerned with civilian lives. As long as the Gulf states finance a rebellion, there will be a rebellion.

You can also win a war simply by breaking the enemy physically and Assad and the Russians have more than enough firepower to do that.

I suspect in order to really secure Syria long-term, a few Saudi agents and arms dealers will have to be dealt with discretely. (or not discretely, depending on the message needing to be sent)

He rarely attacks ISIS. He prefers to attack civilians.

Isaiah 17:1
The burden against Damascus.
Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.

British rags to be sure, but remember all the times we commented here: “Why are we learning what is happening here in the US from this Brit journo?” while it was straight crickets from our own Winston Smiths.

We get plenty of disinformation from our guys because they have expressly admitted (Mika Alphabet) their belief that 1. their job is to tell us what to think, and 2. they claim objectivity, but their actions belie their political ideology.

Back to the 1984 analogy, they even seemed to believe their own polls. Or did they? Why would they keep tapping candidate Trump if they thought they had it in the bag?

I’d say that shows they’re wrong, but it also shows that those who trust and believe in putin have to decide if they trust Trump or trust putin. I’m pretty sure many of them will go with putin.

False dichotomy. Why trust either Trump or Putin? I voted for Trump out of necessity, but no politician is entitled to fanatical devotion.

I guess it doesn’t matter now. In four years, putin won’t likely be around.
