Vladimir Putin has sensationally claimed that the US is preparing airstrikes on the Syrian capital - and will pin the blame on Bashar-al Assad's forces.

The Russian leader made the astonishing claim - that the US is planning to FAKE chemicals weapons attacks - during a joint press conference with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Putin insisted Russia would tolerate Western criticism of its role in Syria but hoped that attitudes would eventually soften.

But his claims that Russia has information strikes are being planned by the US on the southern Damascus region - the aim of which is to blame the resulting devastation on the subsequently discredited Syrian government - will not go down well in the White House.

And at this point, do not totally discount rogue CIA operatives.

My thought too.

It won’t be my war. If it comes it will be because putin attacked the USA or a NATO ally. So unless you believe he’s going to do that, we won’t have a war. I realize if he attacks you will believe he was in the right, but we’ll just have to disagree on the nature of putin and his aggression.

This whole country is a pile of crap. There is no solution and I’m beginning to feel that let them kill each other and then bomb the balance. Turn it into a real wasteland that it already is.

It’s like a fire containment should be the strategy.

These reports are not just in the tabloids, and it's what putin said. So unless we're to ignore what he said, along with his aggressions and anti-American activites, we have to see him how he behaves and by what he does.

Who benefits? Well, I’ve thought about it and one side I see who doesn’t benefit, at all, is Assad? Why would he do this? It wasn’t a military tactic because it was of small effect, killing 45 and maybe killing 100 on a good day. It accomplished nothing in the visible scheme of things but it escalated the stakes and intensity a million times. And whoever did it knew it would escalate things - that’s why they did it. I can think of no reason anyone would do it other than to accomplish that objective. Assad seemed to have won it for now even if he does have new “partner” in the Russians. Why would he want to reshuffle the deck? Who benefits?

To win a war, to really win, you must break the will of your enemy. What would break them more than to know that assad, with putin's help, could use chemical weapons with impunity? He did the calculations and decided he benefited. Meanwhile, his champion and patron, tell the lies that many swallow whole cloth, their reflex anti-Americanism making them vulnerable to the lies of a KGB thug.

I think that it is absolutely necessary that the people who vote be provided with all the information and consider all the possibilities in the important matters our republic faces.

We just had eight years of misery because the majority of voters in this nation voted with their hearts and not their heads.

It is difficult to see why Assad would use chemical weapons against his civilian population at this point in time.

That doesn’t mean it is impossible.

He might be trying to scare some people.

Also, we have a significant number of American Soldiers in Syria. This chemical attack might have been a message to us. He really doesn’t have anything else he can scare us with.

People are not stupid to consider all the possibilities and then try to decide what really happened.

I'm pretty sure it's this.

I’d say that shows they’re wrong, but it also shows that those who trust and believe in putin have to decide if they trust Trump or trust putin. I’m pretty sure many of them will go with putin.

Exactly. So in order to FINALLY defeat ISIS. We have to bomb their Mom and Dad back home in Riyadh.

“So says putin, the man some trust more than the President of the United States.”

When Obama was President it was definitely a toss up as to who to trust. Some would say the trust factor was 51% to 49% in favor of Putin over Obama.
