"They" are leftists, who are anti-Christian, anti-Western, and anti-capitalist. They are so consumed with their agenda of cultural deconstruction that they have little interest in what comes next. They assume that they can control the levers of power indefinitely and mold the successor society to their liking.

Satan. It's a spiritual thing perhaps more than simply a cultural and demographic phenomenon.
Starting with the secular, humanistic, nihilistic, and Marxist philosophies of the 18th and 19th Centuries which innundated European "intellectual" thought, the deadly infection of "Progessivism" spread in it's various anti-God forms. This was greatly accelerated by the wholesale slaughters of WWI and WWII whose horrors resulted in a wholesale rejection of God among most of the survivors. After all, how could HE allow such a thing to happen? Eventually, all (or most) of Western Europe thoroughly rejected God. Now they find themselves under Judgment. One need look no farther than the Old Testament to see why and how this works.
Ironically, Eastern Europe managed to hold onto much of their Christianity and culture because of the stultifying influence of Communist oppression, so they still have some of their old Christian values left and a chance of survival during The Coming Judgement.
Once a society knows and then rejects God, it is not a pretty ending.
