A ringleader in one of the biggest Social Security disability fraud cases in U.S. history has pleaded guilty to filing more than 1,700 bogus applications, bilking the government out of potentially a half-billion dollars.
But the administration is struggling to figure out how to handle the applicants, many of whom say that even though their applications were falsified, their cases are real and they shouldnt be punished for having been ensnared by the massive fraud.
Eric C. Conn, a prominent lawyer in eastern Kentucky, signed a guilty plea late last month acknowledging the scam, in which he recruited and filed at least 1,748 fraudulent applications, complete with fake IQ tests or medical exams. He had a team of doctors and psychologists sign off on them, then had a Social Security judge rubber-stamp them.
All told, his scam left the government on the hook for more than $550 million in lifetime benefits, with more than $46 million doled out as of October, Conn admitted in his plea deal.

They will let him plea really low and retire with his pension.

Does The Turtle have connections to these Great Americans?
His name was CONN!?!?
I rememember hearing about this type of thing some time ago-———all the families were getting checks for learning disabled kids-——which the kids called “crazy checks”.
The government can be so damned stupid.
That’s a great question.
Yep, can’t you just imagine a lawyer named Conn. sheesh
The IQ test qualification for lifelong government support, along with being suspect to start with, seems like an easy thing to game. Either you are stupid or you should be smart enough to fake stupid in taking such a test.
I think a show like 60 Minutes covered this guy a few years ago. Whatever he’s done, multiply it by 1000 and it might start to reflect what goes on every day across the country.
There are thousands of able-bodied people who consider it, in their area and peer group, a badge of honor to get on lifetime disability, better than getting an award or diploma (or paycheck), since they’ve screwed the system. All on our dime.
A lawyer in my neck of the woods was in cahoots with a local doctor. The doctor was giving the lawyer’s clients bogus medical check-ups to get them on Social Security disability.
The lawyer was caught and he was sent to prison for ten years! Just kidding! In actuality, the lawyer paid a small fine, and he’s back on TV running ads. “We’ll get you all the benefits you deserve!”
Oh, did I mention that the lawyer is also a county politician?
Conn job! This guy was well Conn-ected.
It’s not just IQ. It can be behavior problems, autism, learning disabilities, etc. that can get a family a check every month, if they can get a doctor and a judge to agree. When I signed up for Social Security a few years ago, I was the only geezer there—everyone else was there for disability.
[His name was CONN!?!?]
The Library Cop’s name is “Bookman”?
That’s like an ice cream man named “Cone”!

Yep. it’s true. And it makes for a cottage industry in my neck of the woods. There are folks who will - for a fee - come to your house and teach your kid how to “fail” a school’s diagnostic test. And so the kid gets classified as learning disabled. And momma gets a nice check each and every month.
I still think that 1,700 number is too light. I’m from that area and I know people who are friends with Eric Conn. Most if not everyone back there are Democrats and the only reason Conn is even made it to trial this time is because obama has caused a lot of those people to vote republican. Because of this the state legislator for that area was finally defeated very narrowly and the Ky commonwealth legislature leadership finally changed hands to the republicans. We even have a surprise republican governor. Now that the republicans are finally in charge, a lot of the corruption in the system will not be overlooked.
Great name for the POS. Conn = Convict.
Funny, not ONE WORD on Civil Asset Forfeiture, the Government should have already SEIZED 100% of their Assets as Profits of a Criminal Enterprise.
